Sometime last year I drew up a short article explaining, with images, the basic components of a popular desktop hard drive, a 3.5" 1TB WD drive. The article might be useful to people who want a basic intro to the major components that make up a hard drive or to put the basic principles of data recovery into perspective.
http://www.southbit.co.za/inside-a-hard-drive/Doomer's original article in this forum is more thorough and can be found at
http://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=12400, but perhaps this article is also useful as it shows a drive which parks heads on a ramp as opposed to the Seagate article in which the drive parks heads on the platter.
