Hi everyone,

The following HDD has seen its PCB burning inside a an external enclosure, which power adapter has then made a "CLAC" noise. R.I.P - rest in peace :) Basically, the "SMOOTH" square chipset (located on the power side of the PCB) has litterally exploded.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 / 200GB ATA/133
YAR41BWO K,M,B,A / 6Y200P0062811
PCB: Calypso 301862101 / M8FYB

I'd like to know if it is possible to recover the data, or if there is any risk to loose some of it, using a PCB from the following HDD, which used to be its RAID friend and has identical LBA

Maxtor "DiamondMax 10 / 200GB PATA133
BAH41B70 K,G,B,A / 6B200P0040611
PCB: Sabre 301956100 / B2GBA

If not, which PATA/SATA PCBs would match ?
Thanks for your time.

Hi,

since they are of different family PCB swap won't work.
U need to find a compatible PCB from the 'calypso' family (DM+9).

Hi:

I have a Maxtor Dianmond max plus 9 80 GB ATA/133 Hard drive with a fried smooth chip. Due to power surge caused by wrong power supply connected to HDD.
Details of HDD:

Code: YAR41BWO
PCB type : F4FYA
Smooth chip is L7250E 1.2
With agere ardent c8-c1 main chip

I want to recover data. Would changing the PCB be enough or do i have to worry about anything else.

Please help!!!

most of the times if smooth chip is fried the preamp is gone to first u have to find an identical pcb and check if preamp is burned or not .

one method:
hard-disk-drives-repair-and-data-recovery-f1/maxtor-160gb-harddisk-burnt-t7740.html#p47394

U may also check and compare the +5V line with a known good HDA.

regards,
pepe

Hi everyone,

I own this HDD (but the smooth chip caught fire):
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133 120GB
Model: 6Y120L0 YAR41BW0
Ardent C8-C1 040111300
Smooth: L7250E 1.2
Sticker: G6FYA

I found this PCB (notice that the only difference is the sticker code)
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133 120GB
Model: 6Y120L0 YAR41BW0
Ardent C8-C1 040111300
Smooth: L7250E 1.2
Sticker: M6FYA

I understood that one has ROM and the other doesn't, causing FW pbs (?)... but I didn't really understand if, in the end, I can replace my G6FYA-burnt-pcb by the M6FYA-new-pcb (as firmwares seem to be the same: YAR41BW0)

Could you help me please?

If this swap is incompatible, is there a PCB that would be compatible (apart from the same G6FYA of course)?

Thanks a lot

hello folks,

new here, and, of course, need your help.

i have an 6y120l0 hdd, which was installed in an external case. once i forgot the 12V connection cable, so i just thought, hm, lets try the one for my mobile computer. this has got 19V dc, and after some strange sounds the hdd died. it does not even want to start with normal ide and power connectors.

question: which device can be damaged? the hdd or/and the pcb? is there any possibility to repair the pcb by replacing a part (like shown above)?
i have a broken 6y120p0 with a broken pcb here. i tried the L0 pcb in that P0 hdd, but same effect - no response.

thanks in advance.

I hope Pepe and Rameez and Gsimon are still around!

Kalabok, I think you beat me in the dumb mistake department, but it was very close. 8-) I caused a spark by trying to plug the molex power into my internal cd-burner during boot. It apparently cooked my maxtor 160GB HDD! The HDD is not detected at all, even by the tools on Hirens boot CD.

There are many folks trying to swap controllers (PCB), but it seems to not work very often!

The list above of compatible parts is not clear, Does it mean that all those listed are compatible even with or without ROM?

My swap did not work even through the PCB was from a live (clicking)
6Y120P0042211 with L8FYA. Mine is 6Y160P00428L1 with M8FYB. The new pcb will not make either HDD click now, so I guess I killed it!

There is a post somewhere that says if the 6Y (1st and 2nd digits) and the 28 (10th and 11th digits) are the same, a swap will work.

Someone else says only the main chip matters (c8-c1).

Can someone post more details on checking the internal preamps? Is there a way to hotwire this HDD enough to get my files?

I have an 6Y080L0 with a known good board and preamps, but bad sectors and a SMART warning of imminent failure.

Is a DIY platter swap possible? Does anyone know if 80 GB and 160 GB are both single platter or not?

Thanks for any tips!

what i know so far,
you have to know the serial number of the hdds u want to exchange the pcbs of.
both my maxtor beginn with y4, that means they do have 60gb package density per disk.
the y3 ones have 80gb and y2 100gb ... this is improtant for exchanging pcbs.

am i right? sorry, im a noob in this topic.

Thanks Gsimon you are good to help us beginners!

Quote:
3/9 --- GND
4/9 --- -5v
5/9 --- +5v

Both :+5V and -5V MUST be check !!!!!

If the resistance between them and GND is 0 ohm
HDA is broken and new PCB will be burnt again...........

My 6y160p00 is 'broken' since +5v and -5v short to ground! (ground is 3rd pin from the end, in the group of 9 pins, in case anyone is confused)

My 6y120p00 is not shorted on +5v or -5v. It was making a lot of clicking and not detected in bios. Can the preamp parts be used to fix my 6y160p00?

As you guess, I want my data back!

BTW- Does anyone know if the 24 pin IC (1776AAA2 45EVFTTF) is common to the 2 head (80GB)and 4 head (160GB) maxtor Diamondmax plus 9 series?

I think it is the preamp and am about to swap it out.

Any tips before I try removing the smd from the HDA? :?

If I am successful:
1. I will have a matched preamp and controller from an 80Gb in a 160GB.
2. Would moving the firmware chip help or be required?
3. Willl writing a new MBR make the data readable?
4. Will recovery software be able to reconstruct the files and folders?

Any advice appreciated!

Hello!
I replaced the PBC, it worked and I could save my data.
So it's just to thank rameez and everyone on this board.
Thank you!

Hello all,

I have a DiamondMax Plus 9 - 80 GB, label reads as follows:

YAR41BW0
N,M,G,A

6Y080L0422611

Smooth chip burned, got a pcb from here:

http://www.softcom.com.my/maxtor_m6fya.htm

Decent price, fast shipping. Installed it and now the drive clicks for a while then stops, drive continues to spin.

I seen a lot of good advice here, should I test the preamp? Is there any hope for this drive?

Found this site from a bit of Googling. I've got the common melted-smooth problem on a Diamondmax Plus 9 with a Calypso III board with an Ardent C5. I have two other DiamondMax Plus 9's, with no important data so ideal for donating parts. However, they both have Calypso KOI boards with Ardent C8 chips.

Is there any chance of the KOI working as a replacement for the III? From the previous comments I think I'm out of luck, but as I'm not having much success finding a Calypso III board I thought it was worth asking the question.

Edit: Adding in drive info
6Y120L0040411
N,M,G,D
Firmware E4FYA
