My HD just died on me. I believe it is the PCB. I purchase another drive from ebay to swap the PCB. Didn't work. It was the same model, size, etc but wrong PCB version. Here are the details:

Dead HD
Code: YAR41BW0
N,M,C,D
6Y120L0041001
Firmware: E4FYA

New HD from Ebay
Code: YAR41BW0
K,M,B,D
6Y120L0041001
Firmware: M6FYA

From what I have read is that I need the one with the ROM or Firmware list above.

I was wondering if you can sell me one of your drives or just rent it so that I can get my data back. I wasn't sure if you were looking for this drive or if you had one. If you have any other solutions I can try, let me know. Thanks.

What makes you think it's the PCB?

hey my harddisk died the other day
it was an a mobile enclosure. i switched it on . it started for a sec
and died straight away. after that i couldnt turn it on and when in a pc the bios couldnt detect it.... the harddisk worked in that mobile enclosure for ages.. part from this time.

so i assume the PCB is dead. Do you guys also think so ?
What are the chances the preamp died aswell. anyway to fix the pream if this happens ?

Here are my details

YAR41BWO
smooth chip ver1.2
M8FYB
6Y160P0042811

i found a company in malaysia that sell the pcbs . shall i go for it ? or is the pre amp dead ? i dont even know why the hd died. it just randomly died. the symptoms are it doesnt spin or make any sounds at all and is not recognized in BIOS

oh one more last question.. Do i need to desolder the connection between pcb and hdd when swapping out the pcb

Check:

3/9 --- GND
4/9 --- -5v
5/9 --- +5v

Both :+5V and -5V MUST be check !!!!!

If the resistance between them and GND is 0 ohm
HDA is broken and new PCB will be burnt again...........

Hi everyone. Here is my situation.

The DiamondMax Plus 9 80Gb hard drive in my wifes computer died this weekend. As I started exploring options on how to recover the few files she really needs, I came across this forum. Although I haven't read the entire thread, I think I have moved to a point where I need more help.

The drive that is toast is a YAR41BWO, 6Y080L0422651, sticker M6FYA. The drive seems to spin up when I power it on. It is recognized by the bios and other drive recovery software but any attempts to access give an error #1117

I had a DiamondMax Plus 9 160Gb hard drive where one of the IC was toasted a year ago or so. It was a YAR41BWO 6Y160P0042211, Sticker F8FYA. Figureing I had little to lose, I moved the CPU board from the 80Gb drive to the 160Gb drive. I was somewhat surprized when I could successfully read the 160Gb drive. That seems to indicate that the PCB from the 80Gb hard drive is good.

So....... since the PCB board seems to be good, what are my options now for recovering data off of the 80Gb hard drive? The drive doesn't make any suspicious noises. It just seems to spin quietly.

I can use all of the help to avoid my wife's wrath!

Take Care all

Hello. I have Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 with damaged PCB.

The code says 6Y080l0422611.

I also have Maxtor DiomondMax Plus 10 wiht code 6L160P0A43201

I foolishly tried to swap the PCB from the 10 to 9 (I haven't read this artcile). Now in result, both hdds dont work :(

Is there a way to at least fix the DiamondMax Plus 10, without involving new PCB?

Hi all, this is my first time posting, so please forgive the spamming below if some info is not needed to diagnose pcb version. Like many others, i have a dead drive, i hear a loud clicking/whistling noise, and the drive is no longer visible in windows. This problem only occurs during the first few minutes the drive is powered, (ie. boot up)

STICKER SIDE:
Maxtor DimondMax Plus 9 120GB ATA/133 CALYPSO
Code: YAR41BW0
SN: Y47DRJ73
6Y120P0

AGERE: 040111300
ARDENT-C8C1-840UK
0443T, 6404643

HYNIX Kor:
HY57V641620HG
0441A T-6

SMOOTH:
L7250E 1.3

Chip side stickers read: MAEEVCGF, H4FYA

I recieved this email from a board supplier off ebay.

"Your board has an unique firmware so it is hard for me to give you a matching board. Basically it involves sending your board in for a firmware transfer..."

From what I have read, i have an odd board due to a chip in the C401A area of the board :(
Any help whats so ever would be much appreciated!

Hi!

Your drive has a normal firmware, which has been used on a lot of Maxtor DM9 drives.

It is very likely for your drive has problems with preamp or reading heads.
There is very small chance that your PCB causing problems.

Thanks for the reply harddrivespecialist

To add to the problems, I tried to power up the drive yesterday, and the smooth chip burnt out. From what I have read in here, thats a likely cause of a preamp failure, correct?

This is more likely a motor gone bad that is why it caused overheating of the microchip.

I'm located in Yorkshire, England. Thank you for your replies so far, theyre much appreciated.

I have another problem, i accidentally unplugged a hard drive during operation, now it will not boot. I'm wondering if it is possible to do a PCB swap on a Western Digital Caviar SE 16? Unless it has caused damage inside?

The PCB numbers match up until a certain point. Also the DATE is within 2 months.

On the damaged hard drive, the PCB numer reads;
2061 - 701537 - C00 01P XW5N02 3NLB 6 0001250 8251. The part that is underlined does not match.

Will this not be a sucessful PCB swap? Thanks in advance.
