U dont have to use adapter with seagate pcb too, adapters were needed when u had to make hot swap flash while pcb was powered on (because wdc logic board will not start without rom or with corrupted rom content)

Thats why u have to short 4&5 legs of flash when powering on seagate pcb (because program will hang up with corrupted rom) when its shorted, program will start from internal rom builtin uP)

Remember this is only temporary solution when u havent proper tools to do what you need. (but works and its cheap even free, just using _own_ brain is needed). If you take your business seriously, consider buying universal flash programmer. its really cheap now. eg. elnec or xeltek

According to the Salvationdata document posted here, you can not write content back to the ROM chip without un-soldering. They state because write protection is active on the M25P10 chip. Can someone verify the validity of this?
Also, what is with other chip sets any experience?

Thanks!

Hi,

I never had problems with writing serial flash roms in WDs without desoldering...

Here is an interesting paper I ran across for new comers on why hard drives fail. You might like to read it

Hi Mates,
I Got These SMD Probes From a Company Called Panoma From USA .They Have a Kit Which Has All These Probes .Also You Can Make a PCB For The Other Side To Be Used Like What Sivava Willem Eprom Programmer Site Does

Just to clarify, the manufacturer is Pomona ( http://www.pomonaelectronics.com/ ) which is now owned by Fluke. This clip is in 8-pin SOIC format.

In a uP system, you can sometimes read and write data stored in program memory by direct access using a feature called Program Space Visibility (PSV).

For example, you could use HDDHackr to write a ROM patch for a Western Digital WD1200BEVS drive to enable it to be used in an XBOX360.

I think I may have misread the documentation. It appears that HDDHackr accesses the ROM modules on the platters, not the PCB ROM.

Has anyone used a Needham's EMP 21 programmer for reading/writing serial flash ROM on WDC Logic Boards? If so what are the connections from the ZIF socket to the SMD probe(IC clip)? I'm assuming the EMP 21 can handle a 25W406A IC.

P.S. What are the connections in the photographs ZIF socket to SMD probe(IC clip). Thank You

hi, all new to this forum.

maybe someone can help me shed some light on this ?

i was wondering if it was possible to edit the flash inside the hdd so lets say i would want to clone it ? like for example the serial no. of a certain drive ? to another hdd ? (what needs to be done if possible? )

can someone please explain to me where the unique serial is written in a hdd ? was this generated from the factory or is it a serial of burned in a chip or the disc itself ? is it possible to replace the serial of a certain hdd ?

I was wondering why a donor board will not work on a WD400BB if the flash is not transferred? what is causing the incompatibility assuming it has the same capacity and model ?

thank you
