How does the Atola imager compare to DeepSpar?

February 1st, 2010, 20:32

Hello,

I'm in the market for a DR imaging system. From what I've read online and of course in these forums, I don't think I can go wrong with the DeepSpar unit but before I commit to making that purchase I though it wise to also look into the Atola because of the price, and the ability to upgrade to Insight at a later date.

All input is welcome but I would really like to hear from people that have actual experience with both devices in regard to imaging and how well the Atola works with recovering data from bad sectors.

I know these questions have been asked before but I've seen a lot of opinions from people wanting to be helpful but who appear to have experience with only one device and not both. Also, the GUI is not important to me as I have no preference when it comes to GUI or command line.

Thank you.

Andrei and his team just made their DeepSpar Disk Imager product a lot better with the release of v3.0 yesterday. If you haven't already upgraded, I strongly urge you to do so.

If you are still trying to decide on which imaging product to buy, this one is worth every cent paid. If you can't make your money back within the first month, you shouldn't be doing data recovery.

What features made it a lot better?

I cannot seem to see any new features that have not already been mentioned as being included in previous versions.

The key feature is the MFT scan. To sum it up, you can target a partition, all the files in the MFT or just a single file.

I appreciate the input but it does not answer my question. How does the Atola unit compare to the DeepSpar unit when it comes to recovering data from bad sectors?

In simple terms and without DS on experience, Atola is simpler to user although it lacks a few bells and whistles.

I have noticed though in the past few releases that Atolas Imaging is getting more powerful, with several key parts in place to make it stronger.

In particular I can now export and save error areas. I am waiting to be able to import them and run other imaging patterns at a later dater over them ;)

What i like (that DS may have also)
- no need to prepare the target media, atola fills unread area with 00 or other paterns (you can define)
- serveral pre-set imaging patterns to handle distinct disk problems, editable
- can stop, start, tweek and resume with ease
- easy GUI from within recovery suite

As much as I appreciate your input you can't answer my question if don't have a DeepSpar or have never used one.

you are right, and i stated so. There will be very few users who have used both in their ultimate versions, probably not even Dmitry ')

I think what puff is talking about is the Atola imager and not the insight, (the insight being the more expensive version with all the firmware functions etc)

the atola imager is more pitched against the Deepspar imager with similar pricing and features.

The Insight and Imager have the exact same features as far as imaging goes, the insight has the added Diagnostic, utility, file recovery, and firmware functionality as well.
