Dear customers,
We have released Atola Insight 2.6 recently spending much time over its features during the development process. The most noticeable of them are:

  • Improved handling of damaged drives on DiskSense Ethernet units;
  • ExFAT support;
  • Files now have an integrity indicators showing what their parts Insight actually copied during the imaging process;
  • File list generation in File Recovery;
  • Disk-to-Disk imaging is sped up to 180 MB/s on DiskSense Ethernet units (see the attached screen shot below).

Pay attention you may learn more detailed release information with screen shots or check out the full Atola Insight 2.6 change log.

It would be great to get any feedback from you. If you want to tell ask/complain/praise the latest Atola Insight 2.6, please do not hesitate to write it here! Every your opinion is really valuable for us.

What do you like or dislike in the latest release?

Did you feel any speed increase while imaging via DiskSense Ethernet unit?

I have Atola Insight 2.6.4595.29524 running:

1) In "Imaging"
When I maximize the window - I have screen resolution 2560 x 1440 - then the little triangle in the "progress bar" has an offset (see screenshot)

2) It would be nice to have a "line per head" in the "progress bar" in the head map mode to see the errors per head immediatly
3) A zoom functionality to zoom into the error patterns would be nice (if it is like the one in the screen shot)

A bugfix for maximised window issue you described will be included to the next Atola Insight release.

Thank you also for the suggestions. We will think over and discuss them. By the way, could you explain "line per head" suggestion? Is it one multi-coloured line where colour is defined by head, or one distinct line per each head?

a distinct line per head ... so that it is immediatly visible that there is a pattern in the damage or not. Not necessary, but I like nice fancy colored images :-)

"File Recovery" crashes with the same "Internal problem" everytime:

"Descriptor 844424930196725 is not file, but directory"

I have submitted the problem to your error reporting system by clicking on "Send error to atola"

Another Issue: File Recovery: "Recalculate size of checked items"

1) It should have some progress indicator (in %)
2) I have case in which it takes very long (1000 GB Partition with NTFS, ~62.000 Files, ~700GB Data - I have cancelled it after 5 minutes) .. Is this a bug or is this ok ? harddisk is ok (contains image of defective harddisk).
3) It would be nice to have also the number of files displayed.

Thank you for suggestion.

Recalculating size of all files requires some time, as it reads every directory on the disk.
We'll try to make it more predictable for now. Unfortunately, it is hard to show progress as the number of files and directories is unknown without scanning the disk.

The upcoming release will also include speedups in file recovery, especially for DiskSense Ethernet unit, so recalculating file sizes should work faster too.

Latest official release is 2.6.1.
Next version of Atola Insight will be 3.0 and it is planned to be released in the beginning of January.

Atola Insight system is all about Data Recovery from day 1. We have never really set any goals regarding disk repair. The only reason for "Repair bad sectors" functionality in disk utilities is because we use it in house for R&D purposes (together with "Generate bad sectors"). Atola Insight never meant to be a disk repair tool.

Firmware: we see fewer and fewer drives that require firmware work these days (again, I am speaking strictly from the data recovery point of view). Hence we do not put any emphasis on this at the moment. Should we see any need for more firmware support, then we will work on that.

For now, the vast majority of drives coming in for data recovery need to be:
a) properly diagnosed
b) imaged as quickly as possible
Hence, we spend most of our time making Atola Insight's diagnosis and imaging capabilities better in order to support more and more kinds of media and head damage. Plus, we see more and more SSD drives, so we also work on better SSD support.

If you have any specific suggestion, you are very welcome to shoot me a PM, or send us an email.
