Insight - ATA over USB??

January 20th, 2015, 21:10

Doesn't seem like ATA over USB is supported by Insight. Any chance Atola is going to catch up with Deepspar and add this functionality soon ?

Actually the native USB drives aren't ATA at all. It's a SCSI command set over USB. So not likely that Atola will catch up anytime soon.

Just to clarify: Atola Insight Forensic does communicate with USB devices using SCSI command set.

AIUI, ATA commands (including Vendor Specific Commands ?) can be tunnelled through to the drive by encapsulating them within a special purpose SCSI command.

    ATA PASS THROUGH (12)
    ATA PASS THROUGH (16)

I stand corrected. ATA over SCSI over USB... amazing the things work at all.

I guess that explains why DDI can work with the drives the same as if it were though a SATA board. Would be nice if PC-3000 came out with a USB addon kit.

Convert to SATA or solder on leads and decrypt on the fly. Easy as pie. Why would you want to deal with an expensive USB add-on? Seems like you might need an update. USB drives are easy.

That adapter is pretty useless when working on USB drives with errors. Also its dang slow. Anyone suggesting that adapter probably has never used one and seen how frustrating it is. We have one and it rarely ever gets used.

That's my point.. It is the only way to do ATA over USB.. by using encapsulated SCSI commands.

It is this functionality that has created all the BadBIOS hoopla as well. It is how the 8051 or ARM processors are controlled on flash drives. Terminology is CBWCB: Command Block Wrapper Command Block

This was my point. Insight DOES NOT work with USB drives as if they had a SATA board the way DeepSpar does. I wonder if they will add this feature anytime soon?

You can try something like this ...

You test it for USB hdd's?

Hi .. I have the USB-IDE Adapter from salvation data, cost me like $300 back then and is junk, it only works with usb 2.0 .. does dont recognice any driver or external Hdd with usb 3.0, I sent tons of emails to their support .. they still haven't release support for usb 3.0 ..
I could be wrong if I understand correctly what needed is support for this kind of interface: http://www.jrin.net/blog/wp-content/upl ... ection.jpg ??
