Hello :-)

I have a problem with the SeaGate HDD:
A friend asked me to try to recover the files from this hdd.
That's what I did so far:
I have connected the drive to the spare PC, and booted livecd linux to see is there anything on the drive. I saw a Windows install that looked almost freshly done, but beside that nothing of interest. Then I've connected the HDD to my main PC (Windows Installed) as a second drive, and run (From a primary drive) a program called "Recuva". It detected lots of deleted files, many intact. I've had no free eniugh space to copy them. So I left it running idle. After half an hour later my main PC freezed for well 20 seconds? PC unfreezed, Drive vanished from system, it stopped spinning. Also first connection to the spare PC was made wrong. I've connected the IDE cable rotated 180*. Later I've corrected that and drive worked until that freeze.

There is no short circuit on main power socket.

Use MHDD to get a read of the SMART parameters. Then post here.

Also, a freeze can occur for many reasons, hence inconclusive yet if it was caused by the friend's drive or not.

Lastly, what is your goal with this drive? E.g. fix it, recover data, recover deleted data, etc. If it is recovering data, you may want to find out from your friend what data to look for.

Test setup done.
CD-ROM connected as Master on one IDE channel, affected HDD connected as MASTER on second IDE CHANNEL.
Booted MHDD. Shows only CD-ROM in the devices list. Selecting "empty" channel, result with green BUSY and trying to gest smart by pressing F8 results in Drive not ready. The HDD, as I said before, does not spin (the engine is off even with connected only Molex Plug) Like there is no power on the PCB...

PS: I think I've made a mistake adding this topic to SalvationData Topic. Can someone move it to "Hard Disk Drives: data recovery and repair" please?

PS #2: Edit option seems to be expiring too soon...

Best regards
