WD PASSPORT ULTRA RECOVERY PROBLEM

July 26th, 2015, 11:19

Hello Everyone,

i have a WD PASSPORT ULTRA 2TB that has been partionned into 3 sections as HFS+ on a mac. I used my HD( Passport Ultra) on a pc a few time with macdrive, as i was out of town and plugged it back to my mac desktop running mac osx 10.7.5 And now doesn't boot nor is anything readable. So far i have tried disk utilities, disk warrior, file salvage, Stellar Phoenix and tech tools pref....I had datarescue II none worked. There is problems reading the blocks, disk utlities suggest to recover any data possible and reformat the disk.
So i went on a journey to get dataescue 4, perfomed the check. I was able to scan the first partition and started the recovery process. There is 326 GB to be salvaged on this one partition only (which i am moving to another HD connected through firewire400, forgot to mention the PASSPORT ULTRA is connected through USB 2 :? ) I started last night and it's at 0.45% only which means 1.5GB has been recovered so far, it says its going to take 380 days !!!!
When i performed the scan i got warnings on the HD saying it was reading very slow...
I am lost and seeking for help and support, my skills are intermediate and i have a mac desktop and a laptop running windows 8.
Can someone please help me and let me know if so far i have gone through the right recovery protocol and also do you believe the recovery time is realistic? Should i stop and do it another way?

Thank you for reading me

Ciff

what tools you have ?
if you are trying to copy through conventional way, i would suggest stop it.
the best thing you can do it to clone it to other drive of same or higher capacity by using ddrescue.

I've got to go with what Jeremy said on this one. If it's reading that slowly it likely needs the WD slow responding fix, and it most likely has bad sectors. If you can't afford to lose the data, I think it would be best to get it to someone with professional tools like DDI 4 and PC-3000 to fix the firmware bug and image it.

The more you push it with software the slower it'll become until it finally just shuts down on you.

You can try ddrescue as MindMerge suggests, however if it's reading slow too you've got a problem.

Thank you all for your responses!

Today i am at 2.30% of rescue still with data rescue4 :( :(
I don't have many tools as of yet but i have a mac desktop and a laptop pc. I can try to ask for the tools you all have mentionned and run them on the laptop under windows.
correct me if i'm wrong, i should get the SLOW FIX from the WD website?
and DDI 4 and PC-3000 ? Run them on the laptop and try to clone my disk

Thank you

you wrong
slow responding fix is to fix some mod's on the HDD

those tools is gonna cost you (it's hardware not software) a lot more than send it to a pro DR firm

If you want to send it over to UK, we can almost certainly help you for a reasonable fee at this stage before it fails completely.

We have all the above kit, and more :-)

PM if interested.
