We are seeking a Data Recovery Engineer to join our team.
Requirements:
~Minimum two years of experience in the field.
~It is desirable to have located in the territory of Canada.
~Knowledge of the good English language.
~Familiar with all phases of the recovery process from diagnostic through completion.
~Data recovery from damaged hard drives, RAID arrays, SSD, and flash drives.
~Knowledge of various file systems such as NTFS, FAT, UFS, HFS, ExtFS, VMFS
~Knowledge of PC3000 data recovery tool.
~Experience in read/write heads swap operation
~Experience in platters swap operation
~Electronic components soldering skills

There are an awful LOT of exceptional DR engineers out there that do not hold a Bachelors Degree..... I think you will miss out on an extremely wide section of candidates by setting such a benchmark....

An education background is a very small part of the picture in a field where experience counts for almost everything...... Paperwork is one thing, but actually getting the job done is a totally different story....

In fact what irks me is that the term "engineer" is so badly misused that nowadays it can just as easily describe a school dropout who drives a train.

If their job was solely DR, then one case a week is not enough to survive, even for a one man operation with a couple of resources and low rent. Unless it is a nice RAID maybe, and it is recoverable, of course.

I think there are a lot of variables that need to be taken into account
2yrs for one guy might be just starting to get through to someone like me or for a young gun with loads of initiative and no ties or care for anything else might be a genius in that time

Here in Australia a freshly graduated engineer would easily earn the OP's asking price. In fact it is little more than our average wage for unskilled workers. AISI only foreigners wanting to migrate to Canada would be attracted by such ordinary pay.

In the UK a B.Eng recognises around 4yrs of structured academic learning including a thorough grounding in fundamentals/first-principles, higher level maths, and usually 1 yr industrial placement.

As the OP alludes, a degree has to be combined with relevant experience to be worth anything to a company wanting to earn money off the back of a potential employee. This rather than offering a just a trainee position.

Just to share fzabkars "irk" here, Engineer term has been gradually eroded from one who designs and builds systems to one that can maintain or simply drive "an engine".

Favourite "irk" here : fridge/washing machine/telephone self titled "engineers" (repairmen).
Usually elicits a "oh right, where did you graduate?" question from me.
In base terms "So Mr Engineer, how long have you been designing all this sh1t or .... ?"

Companies don't help matters by offering the term as a status symbol: title of Production Engineer given to a +10yrs-exp but non-qual'd employee moving jobs internally and needing to see a "promotion" but wouldn't know his x-axis from his y.

and the obligatory engineer joke:
There are only 10 types of engineer: those that understand binary and those that don't.

I can answer why the Bachelor Degree.
This is good for the people of the past Soviet Union.
Bachelor Degree simplifies visa and immigration. If a person wants to stay in Canada, it will be easier to do it.
Actually Bachelor Degree no needed.
$60,000 is the starting minimum salary.
If the engineer suits for us, we can talk about more.
The usual average annual salary for data recovery engineer in Canada and US - $75 000-120 000 and depend from skills.

That is a good point... If you are good at DR and can handle all aspects of the hard drive recovery process with a lot of years behind you, then the company you work for will do anything to keep you happy. Finding good and qualified DR engineers with a lot of experience looking for jobs is like looking for the unicorn at times.

Yes, all true but there is another side .
Very hard to find a decent boss and normal owner data recovery company with which possible good and feel-good working.
Percentage a good owners is actually much less than good engineers !!!
Everyone owner always want to save money instead pay good salary for overtime and research, they love a fast money, immediately money, they want to live at the expense of others.
Here and now I was looking for a replacement my position in Canada (senior DR technician), because I 'm resigned myself to a bad reason, and if I can not find where I can get to new job I will start my own business. I want to say to all engineers with a good skills for future - if someone wants to work in a strong and decent may be small command and earn good money and do not provide a joyful life his owner please write to me. I will consider all resume applications and offer good conditions for engineers who are really worth it.

During this thread the degree/no degree issue was brought up. I heard a really good discussion on the "Loopcast" Podcast with 3 very well qualified people giving their point of views. The subject was "Experts" discussing what makes an "Expert", how people view them and how one might be called one.

The podcast discusses things like computer security, middle east politics and conflict, amongst other things. Good for long commutes or a listen while working etc. It is refreshing to hear discussions in depth on that medium where you can hear the original person with their expression rather than the kind of forum posts where context is often lost in the viewers interpretation.
