Can anyone recover UDO2 disks?

July 31st, 2014, 14:01

So far I have not been able to find a company who recovers these disks, except by having the end client purchase a UDO2 drive as well, which is quite expensive.

Here's the limited info I got from the customer:

Symptoms : optical disk may be damaged. Is a UDO2 media type
Critical Data : files. Jpeg,Tif files
Operating System : Windows Server
Manufacturer : Fujitsu

Didn't someone from Ontrack say that they can do it?

If your client's data isn't worth the value of the drive, why are you wasting your time?

Thank you for your concern about my usage of my time, but obviously I don't consider it a waste of time.

I am looking for someone who already has a drive that can be used with a UDO2 disk, and is interested in recovering the needed data.

Very few companies want to deal in tape drives and other obsolete media because there are too many types and functional hardware to read it is at a premium. Those drives cost over $2000 and your typical lab will never need it again, since no one else is still using it.

I assume your client has the drive already, have them bring it to a lab that's nearby and let them use it for the recovery. Probably can still get an image of the data using it, unless the drive is toast.

It's called "outsourcing". You find someone else who can do the job, farm it out to them, and then add your own markup ... to account for your time. Hence the question in the subject - "Can anyone recover UDO2 disks?"

As I mentioned, I'm aware of the cost of the drives. If the client had a drive that could be used, I would not have made the original post. Honestly I don't need any advice, just seeing if someone happens to be able to recover these disks.

Actually, I never markup any job that I refer out. In this case I will just be passing the contact information on to the client.

Kudos to you, then. I used to do likewise.
