Post subject:  Outsourcing SAS work

Hi there,

I've been a lurker on here for quite some time.

I manage the tech side of a data recovery firm located in Australasia. We are looking for a top of the line SAS specialist to outsource some work to. Location is not a problem for us (IE UK, US etc) but we are looking for a veteran in this area, with the correct skillset and equipment. Any serious recommendations would really be appreciated.

Please feel free to PM any details/price range etc.

Cheers

SAS Problems Explained:

90% of failure Surface Scratches
10% Bad Sectors

this is based on my experience, and never seen SAS with Translator issue and very very few with PCB issue

You may open the cover (Be careful with that) and see the top surface if scratched or not, then NO WAY Anywhere
(Except a ONE Japanese Company specialized on those)
but will cost a hell of $$$$$

this is my opinion here..

good luck

I would be happy to help you (as long as you don't tamper with the drives before you send them to us) within a reasonable price per job. We have a large inventory of SAS donor drives, can fix PCB problems, firmware problems + have PC-3000 SAS and Deepspar SAS at our lab. Email: payam@payam.com.au

I'm actually with einstein9 on this one. Very few SAS drives get firmware issues or the likes. Usually just catastrophic failure, bad heads, bad sectors. Occasionally we see a Seagate needing a translator regeneration. I honestly can't see the reason for much of anyone to even buy a tool like PC-3000 for SCSI. Though I suppose to a bigger lab it could be worth it.

Thanks for the helpful info einstein9 and data-medics. Yeah, I've pretty much come to the same general conclusion with SAS after dealing with lots of them before. They normally go out in a catastrophic fashion. However, in this instance (Seagate), it smells like translator or possibly g-list. I would like to conclude my findings appropriately, for this particular client.

Cheers

Payam - We appreciate the offer and know who you are, but must respectfully decline your firm's assistance. Thank you.

It might be possible to do the translator regeneration just using plscsi. I've never personally done it on an SAS drive (just SCSI) but in theory it should work. Just have to find an SAS controller with a DOS driver.

Talking about SAS/SCSI recoveries, we can offer more than this, as we conduct our own research on them and developed custom tools for these drives, which exceed functionality of publicly available solutions. Therefore can do nearly everything possible with a drive, which isn't dead entirely.
And recovery cost is lower than in the UK/US.

We actually love this and also to not leave my words above groundless, as an example, have recently bypassed TCG on modern Hitachi server drives, being able to extract all the memory, including the SA, keys, etc. from TCG-enabled drive.

So I'll be happy to help, please check your PM.

Yes, that's why we still mostly use diskettes here :)

OK, jokes aside. Fortunately, there's neither Iron Curtain, nor Great Firewall on our borders, so we are able to receive everything necessary from every corner of the globe.

Dimitry Sir ,
Very Nice ,I Personally Have Not Done Much In SAS But Olden Times Fiddled Around SCSI .But this was at interface card level and logical level .How many tools are actually there to work with scsi/sas .One i know is Hydata and Other One is PC 3000 .I also heard many people solving 0 capacity and translator with just software .

What card are you using that has a DOS driver? I tried looking in the past and couldn't seem to find one.

Edit: Nevermind. Looks like LSI 1064 now has a DOS driver.

Hi there,

Apologies that it has been so long but I wanted to update/conclude this thread with my results.

We purchased the PC-3000 SAS edition, solved the firmware issues on two malfunctioning drives and managed to recover an 18 disk RAID 6 which was part of a larger array. I won't go into detail, but two other drives had suffered catastrophic failure resulting in rings so we obviously couldn't rebuild from parity/RS without solving these issues.

Thanks heaps for all the feedback, advice and assist invitations. I have saved your contact details for future reference.

Cheers
