Data recovery vs Digital Forensic Investigator
In your opinion which career is more lucrative in pay and job opportunities?
Why?

This question could be expanded to the wazoo

IMHO the opportunities are what you make it in both. The key to it is not so much the work or industry, but how you put yourself out there, and your social relationships.

in both you could stick yourself away in a lab somewhere and make money.. depending on country, employer, and a number of things, it may be ok money or really good. Or you could get interested in a certain aspect of either, join communities, offer your own time in whatever way and build up.. the key is to build up something to offer, and contribute. hard to explain but you should get the picture. Above all you must work at it, and try and focus a bit, not vacuum up a lot of info but no practical, on the flipside, don't dive into the practical and ignore the theory. Above all, learn to take advice in many forms, and don't take anything personally. a lot of people give advice different ways and sometimes it might look nasty, trolling, whatever.

IMHO, looking at pay and opportunity to decide on a path is the total wrong way to go about it.

Previously you said you had a passion for Digital Forenics.. what exactly do you mean, what sort of stuff have you been doing that has led to this?

I have a bit of a legal background and have been playing with tools like Encase and FTK a bit. What I hope to do is one day open up my own private investigative practice focusing on digital forensic cases (and possibly a bit of recovery on the side). I also initially thought that recovery and investigations were more or less the same but I can now see that while they do share some similarities they are really as different as night and day.

a knowledge in data recovery is a big plus for a DFI.
Good payment : DR
Good career with extra publicity : DFI

If you're young, be a dentist. Everyone needs their teeth polished at some time.
