Dear all Members including gurus especially who are in forensic / interested in forensic.
This is not a challenge ,but sort of competition where everyone will be winner as everyone may share knowledge.
I have encrypted a text file with greetings to hddguru using sophos free encyption tool ( http://www.sophos.com).Password is not complex and is alphanumeric one.
Pls. give it a try to decrypt it. It may brush up our knowledge and skillsets.
Good Luck and all the best
Cheers/ :D

I usually like that kind of things, but I don't know how to bruteforce that file...
If I have some free time later, I'll might do some research to find it out...

is it upper and lower case letters and could you maybe give us a maximum length of the password.

It will help with the decryption process and whether it is worth even trying :)

Hi Cleanroom
I have kept password minimal & simple one , Its first letter is A , second Letter is c ,third one ??? ( A is in caps rest all small ) followed by numerics.
I think I am making mistake by revealing too much :? :? :?
so I have done most of your work.Hope this makes it an easy job for everyone.

Hi craig6928
Yes you are right ,on the other hand some one speciased in making an bruteforce attack with GPU cuda processing may crack it in minutes.
However how to feed large no. of cobinations of passwords in this exe is real question.

yes it possible with a gpu cuda processing but it wont crack it with in minutes unless you know a backway into the encrytion data or the hash key
but again that is going to be protected by a pgp keys

tried to crack your password but everytime a lock out happens

and its impossible to do it in our lifetime

its a good challege for sure

Recently, research students at Georgia Tech released a report outlining the dangers that GPUs pose to the current state of password security. There are a number of ways to crack a password, all with their different pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, the limiting factor in all of these methods is processing complexity. The more operations that need to be run, the longer it takes, and the less useful each tool is for cracking passwords. In the past, most recommendations for password security revolved around making sure your password wasn’t something predictable, such as “password” or your birthday. With today’s (and tomorrows) GPUs, this may no longer be enough.

Although the article never mentions them by name, the newest tools in password cracking are based around two tools, nVidia’s CUDA and AMD’s Stream SDKs. These tools allow programs to be written in C that can be broken up and utilize the parallel nature of the hardware that is usually optimized for graphics. GPUs are much better at large-scale mathematical operations than CPUs because of this parallel layout. Chances are, if you have a somewhat recent graphics card, it is probably compatible with either CUDA or Stream, and if you already know C, you have all the tools necessary to get started.

The lesson to learn here, the longer or more complex a password is, generally the safer it is. Because of this, a number of tools, both software and hardware, may become more and more popular, or necessary, to accommodate this need.

Hi Craig6928
Its good to know all the efforts you have put. Giving best efforts is as satisfying as a final success.
Thanks a lot for sharing updates and latest information on this topic.
