I'm not a data recovery professional, only an interested observer. I don't know the head matching rules for your model. Sorry.

By the way, be aware that the head sliders must not touch. You can use drinking straws to keep them apart.

https://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

Scott Moulton has some Youtube videos on the subject.

And, yes, buy a used HDD and practice on it first.

Good luck.

Yes, that is elementary

I`ve got a lot of tools which consist of plastic, but it is a good idea, I will do that!

Backside of the plastic enclosure is less meaningful than the specs on the drive's cover.
"A" in the model means ATA(SATA), while "U" in the model means USB, like you have in your case.
So, if the rest of the numbers are virtually the same, then the drives are likely compatible.

You have all the information you need for DIY, so it is a matter of putting the plan together and executing.

Though the mechanical work is probably the least problematic. The cloning process will likely give you more headaches.
For DIY home, recommend HDDSuperClone, so you will have to put the Linux hat on for that, too, which will require yet another storage drive for cloning destination, and then a 3rd drive to store the recovered files on once scanning with data recovery software.

Before carrying on with the mechanical practice on the donor drive, familiarize yourself on the donor drive using HDDSuperClone. Why? Because, you don't want to learn that while using your friend's damaged drive. On a damage drive, time is of the essence before the reading heads may die again. So you learn utilizing the software on the donor, as it is stable and easier to work with.

As previously mentioned in the post before, practice is key for everything.
Most people underestimate the process difficulty and screw up badly, wasting time, money on parts and so on.
Good luck.

Thank you, labatech!

Yes, but the thing is, that the hdd "MQ04UBF100" is in an extermal case. I think, you can`t buy this drive like a nonexternal. The chance, that you get the drive I need when I buy the external drive with the SN or model number is higher than yo search for a nonexternal - or what do you think?

What do you mean? If the drive is "MQ04AF100", is it compatible?? If the disk is S-ATA or USB is equal in realtion to the r/w headers, right?

ecommend HDDSuperClone

So far I didn`t knwo that tool, but thank you! I thought I will use dd, ddresuce, or dd_rescue. I have also X-Ways Forensics - this wouldn`t be a preoblem, I think! But it is better to do it with Linux than Windows (X-Ways Forensics). I`ve enough other drives, that is also no problem.

I will test it in a virtual machine.

You`re right but I`m not a beginner in the sense.

This is my last response to this thread, but:

I am not trying to teach you anything. I only 'teach' people that want to listen.

And,

I don`t agree you, you keep trying to talk us out of it.

I'm not trying to talk you out of anything, it's out of my interest. I'm only giving you the headlines of what's going to happen.

Quote:

Exactly that is not the case!!

You said, that chnage the disks will not work -WHY IS THAT?! I'f the r/W heads are defective and the diks is NOT, why should ist work???? Can you answer that at last? THANK YOU!

I've already explained why.

And,
Marco wrote:
Hello, okay, obviously there is no head crash present, because if there were a head crash you coud see the typical "circles" of the disk.

No. Head crash can exist without visible damage to the platters.

Also,

Quote:
The r/w head drives to tge middle and back - again and again.

Now there IS a platter damage, because you obviously ran the drive with the lid open. This means that there wasn't enough air pressure to keep the heads flying above the platters, and they have now scratched the platter. Even if you can't see it.

Quote:
Theoretical it could work, if I would change the diks to another working drive.

We've been telling you it won't work, yet you insist otherwise.

I'm outta this thread, good luck with it.

@northwind

Your statements are not constructive, none of them.

No, but it is equal. Other people try to help, you do the opposite.

I have never seen a headcrash without traces. When the head touches the disc, it's logical that tracks must be there! Shall I post a photo of a head crash?!

Yes, of course...

SPECIAL NOTE FOR USING VIRTUAL MACHINES:

HDDSuperClone is NOT meant to be run from within a virtual machine. It should always be run directly on the hardware. While some modes may work within a virtual machine, it is not in any way supported. Also, the direct modes of the pro version require direct hardware access, so they will not work within a virtual machine, and will likely cause a lockup if used within a virtual machine.

In your case, drive revision is not relevant in parts compatibility.
Toshibas are pretty forgiving when it comes to mechanical compatibility.

Thank you, but...what do you mean with that link? You posted it already.

Shall I test it with the heads from the same model??

And another qauestion: WHY are the used HDD of this model so expensive - why is that? HDD from other brands are much cheaper.

Those drives are compatible.
They are in Germany, so you don't have to wonder where to buy from.

Inflation around the world is at an all time high, so everything is expensive.
