Post subject:  Platter Stand
Hey Guys,

can some one tell me how the Platter Stand works on drives with multiple platters? As far as I know, I need to keep the platters aligned. That's the reason why we put tape on to the platters to keep them aligned if we need to change the chassis in case of spindle or bearing problems. But how can I do it with the platter stand?

I know there are unigue alignment of platters.

It very much depends on the drive. Some are critical for alignment, others not so.

What do you mean with "not so"?
I never saw a drive with 2 or more platters where I can just take the platters out and put them back in without any alignment. The last drive I tried this was a 4 Platter 2.5" WD Drive (WD Passport), afaik Streck LT. It didn't work for me. After I put the drive back together, it stopped working. The heads were fine, I checked them after the procedure in the donor.

I had similar results with an old 160GB Samsung drive from a stack of useless drive I was training with. Same here, after I rotated one platter more than half a degree, the drive wasn't working.

And that's why we (most DR people) today are using tape to hold the alignment of the platters.

I confirm this.

Some models are not critical to alignment at all. I have rotated the top platter by random degrees and it worked like a charm.
On other models, alignment is extremely critical.
It has to do with servo markers, amongst others.

What is the point of an embedded servo if the drive can't find the servo (?) after the platter is rotated? Seems like stupid engineering to me ...

Could it be a runout problem?

This topic becomes more interesting. which models the servo alignment is important. how do we know? I've tried it on some models and it's all gone. Be honest, I am always afraid to play with platters.

Yes, this is why we made this tool. Cant expect us to do all the job for you guys :)
I am glad someone mentioned it. Would you think we would make useless tool?
Try it on some donors and you will see.
If you want to be 101% sure you can use strobe light etc etc.
Point is, our tool is made so you can use it for moving platters as it suits you. And you will have firm grip for cleaning.
Tight them between screw nuts. And you can not mix them since tool has numbers on them for platter number and you can see were was top where was bottom.
Copy cats did not see this, and only useful think they missed ...

No! I think that everyone is happy about the HDD Surgery tools. And the Platter Stand is one of your latest products. And before I buy this product, I'd like to know, how I can use it. And the common state of knowledge is, that you can't twist the platters against each other or you are going to loose all of your data. And that's why we are putting tape on the platter side, when we are doing a platter swap.

As I saw here in the thread, the platter-alignment for some HDDs is critical, for others not so much. That's my first learning from this thread. But how can your tool help me with alignment of the platters to each other?

As I mentioned, I (and as you can see some others) tried it on some drives to twist the top platter and the result was a not working drive.

What do you mean with strobe light? I know what strobe light is, but how can I use to to align the platters? Currently I have the platters of a Seashit ST3000DM001 drive in my hands and there are absolutely no visible marks on the platters that can help me realign it after I extracted the platters from the chassis.

Our part is finished when we explained tool design. Other is data recovery question. We have a stict politic we do not go there.
It is to big,so many clients and sk few of us.
Read what people wrote, should be enough.
