USB HDD USB Broken. How can I read the contents of the drive

December 4th, 2018, 17:15

I have a Toshiba HDTB110EK3BA 1TB Stor.E Basics USB 3.0 2.5 Inch External Hard Drive.

I've been using it for over 4 years, it has all photos of my 2 year old since he was born as well as countless photos of my wedding/honeymoon and other important memories that I do not want to lose. I have everything up to late 2016 backed up onto another external drive but like an idiot, I have neglected backups since this point.

Unfortunately, the USB connector on it has snapped off the board. I have managed to get the HDD out of the enclosure to confirm this, but unfortunately, it does not look like your standard SATA inside the enclosure, meaning I cannot simply (I don't think) move it over to a new enclosure, or plug it into a HDD docking station.

Can anyone please offer any suggestions on how I can go about sorting this?

That should be relatively easy for a DR / electronics shop to solder on to recover. I recommend Pcimage in Peterborough. Not sure how that lies with your location.. http://www.pcimage.co.uk/contact.htm

You can never assume only the connector is the issue once things get broke, but it looks promising.

For me, it’s better to change the controller to a SATA one and switch the ROM chip. This gives better control for sorting out other issues.

PM me if interested, with a good HDD guru discount :-)

So I have managed to get the HDD to power on by literally holding the USB connector in place on the board.
The problem I have then discovered is there is a small pin that has come away from the USB connector which presumably is something that helps with the data reading as although the HDD powers on, it will not show up on my mac. So I'm not sure resoldering on the USB connector will work with the added problem of the pin also disconnecting from the connector.
