With MRT Hitachi repair tools, when you click the menu of “Calibrate NV-RAM entry address”, it will pop up working directory setting dialog box.It requires user to set the current working directory. After it is set, it will pop up parameter setting dialog box of “Calibrate NV-RAM entry address”. Shown in the picture 2.2-6.

Dialog box is divided into following parts: “setting model”, “setting range”, “setting time”, “setting directory”. Among them, “setting model” is only effective for “SA entry address”. “Setting directory” is used to preserve current NV-RAM information, so that it can recover NV-RAM when calibration fails.

Picture 2.2-6 Calibrate NV-RAM entry address

1. SA Entry Address
“Calibrate NV-RAM” is used to search NV-RAM entry address and adjust it to correct figure.“Setting model” includes“Common model” and “Legacy model”. “Common model” deals with all HDD by the same method. It is relatively fast but has no reset process when HDD is in busy status. “Legacy model” is MRT specific feature. It has special treatment for HDD. It is relatively slow but has reset process when HDD is in busy status. If HDD can’t be calibrated by “Common model”, you can try “Legacy model”. If users select “Write NV-RAM”, when calibration entry address is successful, the program will write the correct result in NV-RAM directly and re-identify HDD. The execution result shows in the log.

A. Summary of SA entry address calibration errors
The following reasons lead to SA entry address calibration errors:
a. Reading NV-RAM or RAM failed
It will show following information in log:
Read NV-RAM………………………………………..Error
or
Read RAM……………………………………………..Error

This error indicates that NV-RAM or RAM is unreadable. It may due to HDD code is incorrect or HDD PCB has problem. If the HDD code is incorrect, please select correct HDD family. If HDD PCB has problem, please make sure whether PCB is connected normally or RAM chip is normal.

Otherwise, it will show following information in log:

Read NV-RAM………………………………………..OK

or

Read RAM……………………………………………..OK

It indicates that reading NV-RAM or RAM is normal.

b. Searching key words failed

It will show following information in log:
Searching for SA Tops table image in RAM………………………………………..Error
This error indicates reading RAM is normal but the information is incorrect. It may because ROM information is incorrect or starting ROM is incorrect. It leads to information doesn’t load into RAM correctly.

Otherwise, it will show following information in log:

Searching for SA Tops table image in RAM………………………………………..OK

The normal information indicates ROM has been led to searching matched information in RAM.

c. Preserving NV-RAM file failed

It will show following information in log:
Saving NV-RAM to file……………………………………………………………….. Error
This error indicates backup NV-RAM error. It may because building work directory is failed, the folder can’t to be written in or working directory is locked by antivirus software or other programs, system problem and so on.

Saving NV-RAM to file………………………………………………………………..OK

It indicates NV-RAM backup is normal.

d. Writing RAM error

It will show following information in log:
Write RAM……………………………………………..Error
This error indicates RAM can’t be written in. It may because of the problem of HDD PCB. Please make sure whether PCB is connected normally or RAM chip is abnormal.

Otherwise, it will show following information in log:

Write RAM……………………………………………..OK

e. Unknown error

It will show following information in log:
UnKnow error………………………………………. Operation is Terminated!

HDD cannot ready!
This error indicates HDD has unknown error in the process of hard reset, so HDD couldn’t ready and busy all the time. Due to HDD that users need to deal with having different situations, the read or write time and ready time are different from each other. Users can set appropriate timeout in “calibrate NV-RAM entry address” parameter setting dialog box, or set appropriate time in “tools -> ATA timeout setting”.

B. Summary
Due to it has great different situation among HDD, it has different reasons of failing to calibrate SA entry address. In actual situation, most users need to calibrate SA entry address after changing the PCB. It will change HDD’s servo information and ROM adapter information after changing PCB. These changes may lead to SA entry address calibration failure. If users want to play its complete functions, they need to set parameter correctly and change PCB (write ROM or NV-RAM) according to actual situation and repair experience.

2. User Data Adds
“User Data Adds” is used to search user data area entry address and adjust it to correct figure. Program adjusts user data area entry address in NV-RAM. After revising NV-RAM, it will take effect when HDD powers off and resets. So this process will repeat to revise NV-RAM and execute power off and reset to HDD until it could visit HDD sectors normally. Please be careful to use this function when user couldn’t make sure HDD head performance or disk body condition.

A. Summary of user data adds entry address calibration error
a. Reading NV-RAM failed
It will show following information in log:

Read NV-RAM………………………………………..Error
This error indicates that NV-RAM is unreadable.

It indicates that reading NV-RAM or RAM is normal.

b. Writing NV-RAM error

It will show following information in log:
Write NV-RAM……………………………………………..Error
This error indicates NV-RAM can’t be written in. It may because of the problem of HDD PCB. Please make sure whether PCB is connected normally or RAM chip is abnormal.

Otherwise, it will show following information in log:

Write NV-RAM……………………………………………..OK

c. HDD couldn’t be ready in the specified timeout period

It will show following information in log:
HDD cannot be ready!
This error indicates HDD couldn’t be ready in the specified timeout period. In the process of power off and reset, It has been in a state of Busy. Due to HDD which users need to deal with have different actual situations, the read and write time and ready time are different from each other. Users can set appropriate timeout in “calibrate NV-RAM entry address” parameter setting dialog box, or set appropriate time in “tools -> ATA timeout setting”.

B. Summary

Due to program default to read user’s sectors, if user’s sector has been brokendown or scratched, it will lead to program can’t read data correctly. User area entry address will not be calibrated to correct values.
