Some new models of Seagate HDDs, such as DM001, DM003, as well as triangle-board HDDs, have a firmware lock. For HDDs with a firmware lock, users can enter the T level, but can not perform any terminal commands, or can only perform a few commands of viewing information. Writing and modifying commands can not be executed. Diagnostic Port Locked is displayed when users try to execute a terminal command, and users will see the prompt to confirm the existence of the firmware lock.

Firmware lock is set by Seagate manufacturers in order to prevent refurbished HDDs, which, however, brings obstacles to data recovery . A hard disk with a firmware lock can not perform most of the terminal commands, and can not read the module list with PC3000 or MRT tools. It is not possible to rebuild the translator and can not do any factory operations.

Firmware lock features:
1. Terminal commands can not be executed, indicating Diagnostic Port Locked
2. With other data recovery tools users can not load the module list, read the module, read and write in the service area, or do any factory operations, either.
There is no way to deal with a hard disk with a firmware lock before, but now we finally find a way to unlock the firmware. After unlocking the firmware, the HDD can perform all the terminal commands; users can read and write modules, access the service area, and perform all factory operations.

Seems self-evident what they mean.

Based on what I saw in the video, this is what I got out of it...I added the the suggestion to backup the ROM first and the comment to write it back to undo the changes.

To modify ROM to allow for MRT UnLock

1. Save a copy of the ROM (before changes are made)
2. Modify the ROM via menu item "DM family firmware unlock" (could take up to a minute to complete)
3. When complete or after repower, drive will be at BSY state waiting for LockKey, choose menu item "DM HDDs exchange commands" to get the drive to a ready state with SA access. If loading the utility, after repowering the drive, there is a button to exchange commands on the "select a family window" too.

Write the original ROM back to undo the changes.

It would also be helpful if their video actually matched the menus provided:

Firmware unlock mode I
Firmware unlock mode II
Unlock mode two handshake

With PC30000, one can backup the ROM via terminal, but I only get "Failed to backup ROM!" with MRT. I can't speak for others, but I'm not a big fan of making changes without being able to undo them.

Hello Luke,

Did you try backup in the Bootcode mode ? It's working here ( sw version 2.1.1.3 ).

Regards.

I wasn't aware that there was a bootcode mode for seagates? On PC3000, I click to save ROM via terminal, it prompts to short the board, I click OK and it reads the ROM. I'll play with it the next time I feel it is worth activating my card again.

At this point in the game, I do all my heavy lifting with PC3000 and only play with MRT when the opportunity arises. Thanks for pointing it out @Spildit.
