If a head is bad Self-Scan will fail.

Try to depopulate the bad head first by disabling it or run ARCO (if you can) selecting the heads you want to switch off.

If you run Self-Scan and one head is gone you will reach the limit that the P-List can take for defects on that damaged head/surface and SS will fail. SS will not switch off the damaged head. ARCO can do that.

You might be better off with something like WDMarvel for this task. I did never use MRT to do this so i don't have a clue ...

If you know for sure that one head is gone i would try to disable that head first and only then run SS. Of course if you are not going to use SS you might want to clear defects for the diabled head from the P-List and re-format the drive, etc ...

I don't know if by "shield head" they add the defects to the P-List blocking access to that head or if they depopulate the head by normal means .... One would need to check.

Why don't you try it out ?
