MOMENTUS 5400.6 - striped dish

August 6th, 2018, 12:31

This disc has the upper plate with a deep groove. striped dish.
I changed the heads and modified the ROM with the MRT to adapt it to the new heads.
The disk tries to start with the same noise as before changing the heads and stops.
I get to load the LDR without problems, but the disk after loading the LDR still does not turn.
In the terminal it leaves: "LED: 000000CC FAddr: 00258B57"
For the depth of the disc I am afraid of spoiling the new heads, since it is about 5 mm from the outside of the disc and I think that is where the SA is written.

Before continuing with the album if someone gives me a suggestion, I could help.

Check the heads sliders under a microscope for signs of debris

Indeed, the head 0x03 has the head slider different from the others.
He has made a very deep groove on the plate 0x03.

The heads that I have verified are the originals that the disc carried.
The ones he carries now are those of the donor hard drive.

I put the heads back on the donor and he does not read, I do not know if I'm doing something wrong or my heads are broken by the groove of the disc. I am going to ask for another donor and I will remove and put the heads several times in the donor, to see if I do something wrong.

I leave it for now.

Thanks pcimage.

Odds are, the lower surfaces are toast too.

It is possible that they are wrong, although when I inspected the head sliders, only the head 0x03 was wrong.
Since I do not trust that I am doing something wrong when placing my heads, I will do tests with another donor of this model.

can you show some screenshots of terminal interface?

Try to read the disc and after a while the engine stops and enters rdy.
If you try to do something with the disk, which I really do not know what to do, enter BSY.
When it enters LED CC .....; I lose connection by terminal.

At the same moment that it gave symptoms of being bad the heads should have disarmed the disc and verify the state of the heads. Now I think I have lost it.

I have asked for another donor for the album.
I will change the plate, heads and adapt the ROM.
I put an image of how the disc is.
The sound of the HDD did not make me think it was scratching, but I should have examined it first.

I managed to make a copy of all the SA of this disk and I managed to copy some information but now it does not work again. Is there any way to use the LDR and the translator that I have so that the disk is not going to read the SA and I can tell it to read the SA data that I have copied?

Not really. Welcome to the wonderful world of Seagate data recovery.

This case was most likely a lost cause from the start. Keep in mind that what you see for scratches with the naked eye is only the tip of the iceberg. The damage is likely catastrophic on the microscopic digital level.

Thanks for the reply. It is simple but very clarifying for me.
If I take something out I'll expose it. The Seagate is costing me a lot to understand them.
