I've done it and here's a video to prove it! I'll let Einstein9 give you the feedback!

dell wants to keep all this a secret.

the qeastion is where is this hiding on the dell bios firmware.

Nice work, lollet. I guess that makes you the new guru. :-)

BTW, what is that header to the right and below PCI SLOT2 in the photo?
http://www.redplanettrading.com/ebay/mo ... op-800.jpg

And what is the part number of the chip to the right of it?

Please excuse me if that's an ignorant question. I haven't looked at a motherboard in about 5 years.

You're 100% Correct! I modified the file correctly, but the checksum was the issues. Dell have slightly changed method between the 745 and 755 series.

Perfect XP boot, with no BSOD. This is a work PC so coupled with the fact it's actually lower spec than my 745 and the windows o/s build takes longer to boot / reboot, I kept the video small.

Both the 745 and 755 have this same 14pin header labelled "LPC".
Quick google - Low Pin Count (LPC) Interface, but no one talking about using it for SPI

It's a ST N1808V 78226 VG902

I've circled the flash location in this picture:http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/8aef40afbf5cb4dabba7e985f1f1fd166g.jpg
The MX25L flash is labled SPI_FLASH

Going to have a poke around at some point when I have free time.

lollett hold please i will PM you today about the details you requested in order to finalize this

and many thnx for the time and work really many thnx

but, lollett, the LOGO u used as i told you the word "DEMO" but you added your nickname which is not really what i wanted 100% but it is fine, in fact i did not want to add any extra info. on the logo except the word "DEMO" but this is ur right to save your work and i respect that since you came with it only and the first.

I'm always intrigued when I see undocumented and unpopulated areas on PCBs. Like you, I can't find any reference that suggests that the LPC interface could be used to program the SPI flash.

FWIW, the mystery chip appears to have been manufactured by ST Microelectronics and may have a YWW date code of 2009, week 02 (VG902). I have no idea what its function could be, though.

The LPC interface in this instance is used via the ST IC which is a security module AKA "Trusted Platform
Modules (TPM)"

The LPC is "Probably" needed for burning the secret RSA key during production

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_Platform_Module
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/so ... epaper.pdf

Or maybe I missed something?

FWIW, ST Microelectronics has the ST19NP18-TPM chip which fits your explanation:
http://www.st.com/stonline/books/pdf/docs/12803.pdf

The "1808" in the chip's markings would be consistent with the "18 Kbytes User EEPROM" that appears to be characteristic of the ST19 family.

i would like to thank lollett really, and to be honest here he is really the one, i recommend him as an Expert on this field.

we are almost closing the deal 99.9% of the work is done, and fzabkar i wish that you came earlier but as lollett told me later that he got to know about this post (challenge) by chance since he is newly registered ONLY for this purpose and he thought that 3000$ is a joke, and he tried it only and only because he was researching about his own DELL and ended up here with a challenge .

so why not? and he did it

good to know/have people here with good knowledge i guess this forum is the best on everything
where smart people meet and share info.
