Regular drive works with -20C air temperature inside I just haven't find out for how long and how fast

As for putting drive in a freezer for data recovery purposes - it's pointless IMHO, but it's already become a "religion" or urban legend, so arguing about this is also pointless

I'm a little confused. You appear to be saying that firmware limits the drive's operating temperature. Do you mean that the drive will refuse to spin up if its firmware senses an internal temperature that is outside a specified range? If so, then how did you manage to spin up your drive at -20C?
