Office 2k7 Password Challenge

April 14th, 2013, 7:40

Dear Guru`s

I got this excel file in 2k7,

Details: AES 128 bits - 2007 Office

i cannot tell you how many digits since i did set the cracking parameters to UNKNOWN
but found that it was as easy as 123

The Challenge is:

I ran the Cracking for about 20min. and got the Password on my I7-Extreme Processor

and was wondering how long this might take on a regular or any other Processor (not I7 Extreme)

if you feel FREE, you may run it, and see how long does it take with you.

thank you n Good luck n Thanks for Participating

Forgot to mention this:

you don`t have to CRACK it, just leave it for like 10min. to calculate and will tell u how long is the estimated time

thank you

Cracking the password is not about encryption algorithm but about hashing algorithm
Office 2007 using 50000 rounds of SHA-1 hash runs on selected password.
Also password cracking depends greatly on the password itself, dictionary or hybrid dictionary attack could take about 5-10 minutes but brute force could take years
AES128 encryption is irrelevant in this case

Wow, this is Impressing really, btw, some time ago (not far) i had a call from AccessData team
looking for a Meeting with our Forensic team, and this will take place soon (very soon)

I will open this subject with them really, since never tried it, but good to have some feedback
from you here about the estimated time for it.

Thank you for your juicy info. here

Correct 4, - 10

Took me 10 sec to find it using an old dual core 2 GHz.
Used Parallel Password Recovery Manager. Version 1.6
Used GPU support - ATI RADEON HD 3600 Series ....

Even if GPU can seriously help, actually it really depends on how the software try to bruteforce the password... Doest it begins with letters or digits and how are they are ordered... I think that's why me picture does matter...

If I seted up PRTK to only try 4 digits, it would have taken approximately only 1min

office files are zip files. if you extract them you get the full directory structure of them. It is why a lot of bad recoveries will class them as zip.
