 Post subject: Best Way to Get Business in Data Recovery

Hi Guys,

I'm still pretty new in the DR business and am trying desperately to get my workload up.... I'm actually bored at work waiting for parts to come in.

I've tried quite a few different advertising techniques and so far it seems that most of the work I'm getting is coming from the mom & pop pc repair shops I've left brochures at.

I just wanted to ask those who've been in the business for some time:
What have you found to be the best way work to come in?

Hi,
You need to harness social media and create a "community" for yourself. You dont need to be "on" it all the time, but you do have to do timely updates, and show that you are "up to date". A few tid-bits of related things in the news or cases you have done per week for example.
An interesting blog with a few helpful things, and linking back to yourself showing the ability to do anything non trivial is beneficial.

Also, I was always under the impression that if you performed jos for freinds and family for cheap, it would lead to more work in the long run. I now believe this is not a good idea. I wont say too much on this but I think anyone in IT would know what this means.

Also, try to visit these shops you left brochures at, get to know the owners/workers and maybe chat about jobs a little so they can see you know what you are talking about. Then they will immidiately be able to say to customers "I know this guy that can do this"

That is often one of the most challenging things in this industry.
SEO may help a little, partnerships, etc.

As labtech has said for search engine optimisation (SEO) you could look at http://www.woorank.com/ use it against each page on your website & see where you could improve it.
Websites must be good & easy on the eye & not over cluttered. Doesn't matter how good your SEO is if your website looks bad ie first impressions & looks professional is a must.

I’ve recently decided to build my DR capabilities beyond logical recoveries (to augment my computer repair business) so am interested in the replies from the DR pros. I’m not a pro and don’t have their experience to offer but here are my thoughts.

· The consumer market is not enough for a pro (read exclusively-) DR business. You need to focus on the business and institutional (government, educational, medical/health) sectors because they have the big bucks and the data is more likely to be mission/business-critical and therefore worth the price you need to charge to be successful.

· Awareness, reputation and partnerships need to be established amongst the potential clients in your target market, through a professional-looking web site, participation in business, professional and community clubs/groups (business breakfast clubs, Chambers of Commerce, etc.), social media and advertising.

· Maintain high ethical standards and always do/recommend what’s best for your customer, even if it costs you money/lost business, in the short term. As a computer repair shop, I’ve had customers who were quoted outrageous prices to fix minor problems and were lied to about what needed to be done to recover their data, e.g. “needs an expensive donor and clean room work” to repair what was just bad sectors or shorted TVS diodes. What goes around comes around.

there is a lot of cheaters out there that will use the clean room trick as they will charge a lot more for doing this.
when infact its not needed.
to tell the truth a lot of well known companys do this now to this date.

also i seen adverts offering data recovery $100 any drives
we are the best blah blah
and all they use is software programs nothing more
and dont have any data recovery tools.



it gives the good guys a bad name as they have invested money and there time to build up a good business

i remember back in england when we were doing electronics repairs when it was big in the 80s and 90s

a company would charge £65 pound a time to just check something out
this company never did check the clients electronics they just said it was no good for repair
also the company had a shelf of customers electronics repairs
and they made in a week over £500 just having it sit on the racks doing nothing.

now here the main issue we have the so call cowboys out there that are out to rip of people
and they see the hard drive recovery business as easy money.
and are doing the same above getting the hard drive not checking them out
and giving a high cost for recovery but making a nice money for doing nothing at all


this is why your seeing a lot of diy jobs and also people posting in the forum for help
as they screwed up there drives.
