Seagate new series (Barracuda, Firecuda, Ironwolf)

May 31st, 2017, 13:40

Hello,

I'm a little lost with Seagate's new series.
I'll try to compare Seagate product lines as I understand them in terms of targeted usage, with Western Digital's colors.

Barracuda
The "standard" desktop/laptop line. ~ WD Blue
Barracuda Pro ~ WD Se

Firecuda
The "performance" line for games, workstations ~ WD Black line
(By Seagate this line is SSHD.)

Ironwolf
The "NAS" line.
Ironwolf Standard ~ WD Red
Ironwolf Pro ~ WD Gold (previously Re) lines

Skyhawk
The videosurveillance line ~ WD purple

Where things become more complex ...
- Firecuda series have a 5 years warranty (like the Ironwolf Pro)
- As far as I know, there are currently no 2.5'' drives in Ironwolf series. Then, the closest equivalent of a "WD mobile red" would be a Firecuda drive in 2.5'' form factor.

Concerning vibrations of stacked drives, I'm not certain if they are already an issue with two drives in a RAID 1, or if concern truely arises only with stacks of four and more drives.

Stacked drives are not necessary Network Attached Storages (NAS), as they can be RAID 1 in USB 3.0 or eSATA.
It is not obvious for me if the NAS optimization was designed with concurrent access in mind or if this more an optimization to support vibrations, or both.

Hence I'm not sure if a small two drives configuration in an RAID 1 USB 3.0 enclosure (for one unique user) can use Firecuda drives or should use Ironwolf ones.

Please do not debate in this thread that one brand is better than another and stay focused on the understanding of the product lines. Thanks.

you want to use the iron wolf version as design for a raid system.

dont use the firecuda drive as that is for gaming and not design for a raid at all
you could use them but that be a waste of money and more chance its going to break down.

Well,
You should not be using any crap made by this company called seagate period

Not sure you can dismiss anything at all branded Seagate. There is a lot of tech in that company, and the crappy hard disks getting most attention should cop the heat, but with the following picture, there must be some good in there somewhere

no love for seagate hard drives

what they need is quality control on there products as they cut corners.
for sure there products have gone downhill a lot

lots of fails from head-stack issues to spindle motors lock up.
which is a common issues

western digital are the ones i uses now

except there crappy my passport drives that fail with out giving notice.

there != their ;-)

yes their drives are crap seems to be the most popular verdict. But they also make a LOT of flash products including some fantastic enterprise flash based storage. I haven't heard enough to know what the quality of it is. Do the general feelings of Seagate also extend to the Samsung stuff as well?

i wonder if the fail rate is down to where the hard drives are made in all parts of the world.
not just at one factory.

seagate says lets buy some secondhand spindle motors cheap for our hard drives lol

but for sure there quality control needs to improve big-time.

samsung are very good

Habits are hard to break! Most of my work is in Edu and Gov sector. Teachers are some of the worst when it comes to spelling and grammar, school Principals ARE the worst!

So I correct people as a lark, not really seriously as these days.. does it really matter that much? :-)

Hitachi drives are good as well.

Since we're picking on spelling and grammar, there is no need to capitalize the P in principals unless you are using it as a title.

Yeah, I've seen some absolutely terrible spelling/grammar from teachers. You know what they say, those who can't do....teach. That's why Salvation Data's next venture will be a data recovery school.

We all have our favorite and disloved brands. I'm no exception to that.
However, every brand has consumer and professional series.

Also, you cannot compare 2.5 drives and 3.5 drives.

I have owned almost 800 drives and it gives some perspective.

I have seen lot of Seagate 2.5'' drives in Dell Professional series of laptops, years after year. If those drives were crap, Dell would have switched to another supplier. Of course, those drives are not the same as the ST????LM?? series that are used a lot in external hard drives, which are prone to the head stuck failure.

@Amarbir: Before telling that Seagate drives are crap and Samsung ones are very good, you should consider that some Samsung hard drives like the ST2000LM003 have "Momentus" and "www.seagate.com" written on their sticker! And those Spinpoint / Momentus drives have the same head stuck vulnerability, no matter whether they come from Samsung or Seagate.

I have also seen head stuck with an Hitachi 7mm drive. Thin leightweight hard drives are prone to this, whichever the brand.

By Western Digital are also some pretty unreliable product ranges, like WD Green, WD Elements (and sometimes MyPassport).
Western Digital also makes reliable product ranges especially WD Gold (previously RE).

There is always a price for reliable product ranges, whichever the brand.

I agree that Hitachi drives are usually reliable, but their 3.5'' drives heat a lot.

Every brand is aware about is good and bad series.
New families of drives are an opportunity to correct the weaknesses of previous series.
Only the time will tell if a product range is good or not.

Ummm....I'm out of my depth, this is probably ridiculously simple for all on this forum but I can't find an answer in other places. I have a Barracuda 7200.12 drive from an old failed Mac, I've put it in an enclosure to recover the data. I don't know what power supply to use - the label says:
5v 0.72A
12v 0.52A
What power supply do I use?
thanks for any help

A 3,5" drive uses 12V and usually 1.5A on the PSU.

Seagate's external drives usually come with a 12VDC, 2A adapter.

Thanks - I think I've got it, please confirm my understanding:
I'm using the enclosure in the attached picture, with power input and USB 3.0 sockets.
1. The HD will get its 5V from the USB cable
2. I use a 12V supply to the input power socket
Thanks for answering dumb questions.
