Hello experts

I'd like to know what is a general policy on how a data recovery shop will verify (or allow the client to verify) that the recovered file(s) are actually usable before paying for the service.

For example, in the trivial scenario that a client has a crashed HD with 1000 JPG files, then verification is obvious. The data recovery expert will quickly go through the recovered files and report to the client that, say, 95% of the photos have been recovered. Client pays, expert provides the 950 files and everyone is happy.

Assume though that a crashed HD has some binary files which are of a format that the data recovery expert isn't necessarily familiar with. Imagine for example some obscure index files of an ancient db. The data recovery expert may be able to recover those binary files and provide them to the client, but the client may, after the payment, discover that these are in fact no longer usable.

What is a policy or way to work around this problem in a way that ensures than neither party will be hurt? (e.g client paying but getting junk, or expert providing files for verification and client using them but claiming that they are unusable)
