*** BAD BAD NEWS *** FOR DATA RECOVERY

Ok, I have to Confirm, however apparently Seagate is to Offer FREE Data Recovery on all its ranges of hard drives under the full warranty Period.

Sourced from NASCOMPARES UK

There are also Rumors that WD will follow.

If this is true, we will be only recovering out of warranty drives!!

If you mean nascompares.com, then it's a one man outfit. Where would he get such information?

https://nascompares.com/contact-us/

Alternatively, why not ask me on the ASK NASCompares forum, by clicking the button below. This is a community hub that serves as a place that I can answer your question, chew the fat, share new release information and even get corrections posted. I will always get around to answering ALL queries, but as a one-man operation, I cannot promise speed!

Yes, seagate is offering data recovery services under warranty period. But not for all seagate drives. I heard only for few portable drives till date.

Yes, Seagate is offering services... to add, it is also doing non warranty drives on special requests.
The paperwork procedure is smooth. UPS provides doorstep pickup. One has to pay just the customs (under 100USD in India) and gets a free replacement drive if the patient drive is under warranty.

There are certain schmucks in India who are millionaires possibly and do not wish to pay even 200-250USD for a recovery who I myself direct to go to Seagate and have things recovered and not waste my time :D

But then there are also cases who want data urgently (like for tax filing etc) and cant really wait to spend 45 days for data recovery....
There are way too many drives for seagate to handle....i see work for the next couple of years though...good enough time to acquire skilled in embedded systems for me and change the profession :)

I am aware that Seagate has been including data recovery services in the purchase price of certain models for quite some time. However, the OP's announcement seems to be referring to a new development.

Yes. Seagate has been doing this...

I know a few people locally who had drives under warranty and have got a reasonably low DR done successfully with Seagate.

In fact with some social (reverse) engineering skills, I inquired with UPS and found out there are many parcels being sent to the Netherlands for recovery from India..

Interview with manager Seagate data recovery Amsterdam. Success rate 90%.

Let's see how he reaches this rate:

“20% van wat we binnen krijgen, beginnen we gewoon niet aan, omdat we visueel al kunnen vaststellen dat de data op de schijven onherroepelijk verloren zijn”, aldus Melvin Plak, “Van de resterende 80 % kunnen we toch een succes rate van 90% voorleggen."

lol.

So they dismiss 20% immediately after visual inspection. Then of the remaining 80% they successfully recover 90%.

So for each 100 drives they receive for recovery successfully recover 72. So then success rate would be 72%.

This is where I found the interview (ran into it while looking for something else): https://www.dutchcowboys.nl/technology/ ... n-aalsmeer

Hehe, they have stretched the number to their benefit.
However, success rates are anyway bullshit IMHO.
Simply, there's no way you can calculate it.
Let's say you're top-class in DR and within one month you get 20 cases, 10 of them being with scratched platters/opened drives with flipped platters/vandalised drives and another 10 are TRIM'ed SSDs.
So you recover 0/20.
What's your success rate?

General rule, the better you are, the most difficult cases you get, because people/other labs will outsource to you all the bitch-cases they can't do.

yeah, that's what i am suffering from :)
sht cases all the way...
getting used to it.
But the success rate is a lot better than 0/20.

I know, with 0/20 I was exaggerating to make a point. :)

also I have a case that was returned by SRS.

If this case can not recovered now, will it be deducted from my statistics?

as a litmus test, there was an iron wolf drive that I asked the client to send it to Seagate as he had no practical budget. I am closely tracking the case...lets see..
Sure shot head issue....HM was not giving any success either.

I think they do mostly easy cases (bad sectors, FW problem, etc). Hard or very hard probably back to client (or not) with diagnosis: not possible.
I had in past few cases after Amsterdam lab. Mostly it was done by us within 15 minutes. Seagate told customer that recovery was not possible.

yeah, that's kind of when they do it only for the $$$$ . I also love the feeling of it when it's done and client happy... as most of you probably do...

There is another way to look at the percentage numbers in a more "logical" way :) If they reject 20% right off the top, then that must mean that 20% are total garbage. And another 10% that can’t be recovered would be 10% that are just plain junk. So 30% of Seagate drives are either total garbage or just plain junk

Probably safe to add another few percent, maybe more, of all the victims that have HDD crashes, take to computer shop and they say it is dead, and cant be recovered.. or can be for $1,000 at a lab, but customer doesn't bother to go any further.

Re: *** BAD BAD NEWS *** FOR DATA RECOVERY

December 30th, 2020, 18:30

i don't think the 20% they reject instantly is unrecoverable, i think these are just not feasible for them. I also doubt it's only 20%, but we won't ever know that.

Seagate Data Recovery Procedure:

1) You register your case with seagate.

2) Drive submitted to their local collection office.

3) Drive sent to Netherlands (Seagate Office).

4) Drive sent to lab for analysis.

5) if found logical case, they recover data if possible and copy to another new drive.

6) if found physical case, they recover data if possible and copy to another new drive.

7) if data is recovered, seagate will inform customer about that. But never shares the information of how much data has been retrieved. ( not even data screenshot sent on email ) .

8) Seagate ships the new drive directly to customer's address ( Data included)

9) Customer had to pay around 100$ ( depends on the drive invoice ) as custom duty to clear the package. ( as per my country custom policy )

10) if data is not recovered and customer want patient drive back with the new drive ( Still had to pay custom duty )

11) if data is not recovered and customer don't want the patient drive back, seagate local office will ship a new replacement drive to customer without any additional cost. ( Case Closed )

12) seagate data recovery engineers are same like any other DR Pros. They also deal with the same senario.

13) Seagate lab resources : few Pc3k, few Dfl, few deepspar and ofcourse seagate factory resources. ( maybe more but i heard these through my connections )

14) But seagate lab do have latest generation drives afh resources which 99% DR Pros worldwide don't have till date.
