I'm writing this post as an insight into the laziness of tech reviewers.

Here is an SSD with a Phison PS5018-E18-41 flash controller. Alongside it is a Phison PS6108-22 Power Management IC (PMIC).

Here is Phison's blog:

Seagate Beskar Ingot NVMe SSD – A Star Wars-Themed Hyperdrive Using a Seagate-Vetted Phison PS6108 Controller:

The 1TB model features 1GB of SK Hynix DDR4 primary cache, a Seagate-vetted Phison PS6108 controller, and 176-layer 3D Micron TLC (Triple-Level Cell/3-bit) NAND. All fast, long-lasting components.

Notice that Phison incorrectly identifies the PMIC's part number as the flash controller.

Now let's read some "reviews".

The Beskar Ingot NVMe is a 2280 (22mm wide, 80mm long) PCIe 4.0 x4, M.2 SSD. It’s available in both the 500GB and 1TB versions we tested. The 1TB model features 1GB SK Hynix DDR4 primary cache, a Seagate-approved Phison PS6108 controller, and 176-layer 3D Micron TLC (Triple-Level Cell/3-bit) NAND. All fast, durable components.

The FireCuda 530 is a 2280 (22mm wide, 80mm long), PCIe 4 x4, NVMe SSD. Seagate, like many other vendors these days, are loath to reveal the fine details of their SSDs, so we’ve taken to stripping off the labels and reading the chip numbers. The 2TB model I tested has 2GB of SK Hynix DDR4 primary cache. It uses a Phison PS6108 controller, and it stores bits on 176-layer 3D Micron TLC (Triple-Level Cell/3-bit) NAND. Good stuff.

The drive itself is a four-lane PCI Express 4.0 SSD manufactured on an M.2 Type-2280 (80mm) circuit board. It employs the NVMe 1.4 protocol over the PCIe 4.0 bus and uses 176-layer Micron TLC NAND flash as well as a Phison PS6108 controller.

This 3D device is equipped with 1GB of SK Hynix DDR4 primary cache, a Seagate verified Phison PS6108 controller and a 176-layer 3D micron tLC (triple-level cell/3-bit) TLC. Everything is fast and durable.

It appears that these "reviewers" simply regurgitate the marketing materials that are provided by the manufacturer.

I think this indeed happens a lot.
