Yesterday's release of 164541 has fixed my crashing issue. Via an email from tech support, the Symlink icon is used both for the symlink itself and the target. It is my understanding that they intend to change the target icon to something more appropriate and less confusing in a future release.

A new build of R-Studio: a lot of improvements, the most important being:
* The overall HDD SMART status is shown directly in the Drive View on the HDD icons.
* Hard links, symbolic links, and their targets are shown using different icons.
* Search for Not equal string is added to its Text/hexadecimal editor.

Have not had time to check this build, still using an old version without this "feature"

It has been fixed already, and the Technician version has options to control handling.

I disagree, you can not disable the function. So not fixed.
But you can adjust options in settings, but you can not disable like it.

Although it is "working" as it is now, I'd still prefer to have it completely disabled, by default.

Well, I think all this is required some clarification.
First, if you need to completely disable and get rid of this feature, go to the Settings -> Symbolic Links and select Recovery as it is. This is the way how R-Studio had recovered symlinks before their support was introduced. These settings are in the Technician version only.

This support was introduced because many inexperienced users recovered their entire C disks, then went to the symlink Documents and Settings on the recovered data and appeared in their own Documents and Settings.

There were several bugs in the implementation, one of which discovered by Data-Medics: Missing Users Folder Bug Explained!. Hopefully, we have fixed them.

Thanks for the explanation! I've updated my support.

Minor/simple request: please add "512 bytes" to the drop-down list of stripe size for RAIDs. It's annoying to have to type this in manually and is a common enough stripe size that it should already be part of this list.

Thanks,
Brian

"Recover as it is" is not the same as completely disable.
If you select a folder it still marks objects in linked folder and also follows the links when browsing.
Also counts the files @ link destination in status line.

So please - give us the option to disable this "support" and make newest R-Studio useable again.

Also I have found a limitation which would be useful to resolve, applies to all versions of R-Studio I have tested so far (6,7 & 8 ) :

When rebuilding a RAID array the maximum offset that can be used in the 'Virtual RAID block' is approximately 2,140,000,000 sectors. If I enter 2,150,000,000 or above the offset automatically resets to 0. WinHex and UFS handle is OK.

I realise that it's not often that an offset so high is required, but we have a RAID volume in currently where the customer created multiple RAID volumes in the RAID hardware controller and consequently the RAID disk order changes for each volume. It has been necessary to find the start point for each volume then rebuild with a different physical disk order. Fortunately the RAID layout is standard (PERC controller), so it is not necessary to create a custom block map and the volumes can be created in WinHex or UFS. The reason why we want to handle it in R-Studio is because the customer requires deleted data from the RAID volumes, which is usually best handled in R-Studio. The way around it in this case is simply to use WinHex to destripe and copy the volume to a disk image file, then use whatever software is best for recovery of the deleted data.

However, it would be useful to sort out this bug, particularly if it was a RAID with a custom block map that other software cannot handle.

Best regards,
John

A new R-Studio version: Support for Windows Storage Spaces created by Windows 10 Anniversary update, NVME devices, and file mask presets. An improved raw file search algorithm: better recognition of mp3 and mkv files, a special parser for mts, mpeg, flv, and gz files, file names from internal tags for pdf, docx, doc files, and support for time+manufacturer+gps for mov files created by iPhone6 and later models. Plus more improvements and bugfixes.
