Hi,

What version of Excel were they using?
Have you tried opening it up in the latest version on Excel?

I had it in the past where say a 2003 file wouldn't open but opening it in 2010 it would repair it & open it ok.
Then I just saved the file to a new location.

Have you tried Open Office? might be worth a try just in case?

Microsoft have this link http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel ... 34656.aspx

Also http://www.stellarinfo.com/excel-recovery.htm $49 for Excel Soho license $79 for Word, Excel & Powerpoint Soho

Its possible it didn't save properly & the corruption is too bad.

Using google search comes up with various softwares you could try? ie http://www.excelfilerepair.org & others.
Most likely you will have to try various until you find one that either works or you decide it's unrecoverable.

Didn't think it supported 2007?

Standard Windows Explorer - style interface.
Host OS: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista.
Supported *.xls file formats: Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP/2003.
Automatic or manual search for Excel sheets. R-Excel searches for Excel sheets on all (including network) disks visible by the host operating system.

I suppose the excel file could be either .xls or xlsx depending how it was saved

agreed, you should compare the header of valid file with corrupt file, if the header is ok, there are chance to repair the files, else it will be difficult.

you can get header information here...

If it is a .xlsx and not a .xls, you might also try .zip file repair tools. .xlsx are just a zipfile of around 8 folders and 15 files IIRC. You may be able to unzip damaged file with a util, and repair it manually. I *think* I saw a talk at a InfoSec conference about this, or an online blog or something, but cant remember where. search.
for example, I right-click on excel spreadsheet and from 7-zip context-menu choose extract here..

How did it get to be "corrupted" ?

Did the drive fail? Or did you delete it and use software to recover it?

I thought Didier Stevens had some Office stuff, but I think now it is the .pdf analysis I was looking at. his stuff is great, so that should be checked out by anyone that does any sort of file carving/forensics. But I doubt any serious forensic guy hasn't already seen Didiers work.

this may be of use, Lenny Zeltser is also brilliant.. those 2 guys alone make me feel like a dumbass!

be warned, there is quite a bit of work involved. Sometimes these files are simply too far gone, and you spend way more resources than what you will ever get rewarded for.

Well, to recover your Excel file try to make the Excel file read only and then recover it.
Here follow the steps to do it:

 Click on the ‘Office button’ and then select ‘save’ for a new document or ‘save as’ for the previously saved document.
 Next, you have to click on the ‘Tools’ and then select ‘General Option’.
 Click on the ‘read-only’ checkbox to make document read-only.
 Now you have to open a new and blank .xlsx’ file and then copy the whole data from the corrupted Excel file to this new one. Now simply save this file and try to open it again.

Hope in this way you can recover Excel file.
