Hi
My dell inspiron 1545 hard disk get badSectore and gone bad.
So I bought an Hitachi hdd(type tt5sae500 b ,hgst HTS545050A7E380,p/n 0J11285,
mlc DA5280, cp/n h2t500854s7, f/w gg2obc90 , s/n 4c0y4x8m)
I connected it to my other computer and partitioned/format it no problem.
After I put it in my dell its no longer turns on and not detected by any laptop/computer.
I put another new one, and connected it to my pc and prtitioned it with no problem.
And again when i put this brand new hdd in my dell it gone broken , not turning on and not detected!!!
Whats the reason and how i can fix this hard disk.
Is the firmware corrupted somehow?
Drive fitness software shows zero GigaBytes as capacity.
Can I update its firmware by myslef with no extra hardware tool?
I've no important data on it , I just need to make it working again.
p.s:my 160gig original seagate hdd still works with my dell and pc , its only get slow and badsectors.
whats the reason behind such strange/destructive behaviour?! obviously my dell mainboard and sata connectors are ok because they still working ok with the original drive!

Sounds to me that your laptop power supply might be killing the drives. The PCB's could likely be replaced to repair the drives, but it might cost as much as just buying new drives.

I recommend you take your laptop to your local computer repair shop and have them diagnose your system.

Thanx for ur help
but it working ok with its original seagate 160gig drive
i want to replace the drive so getting more space.
I just now formated and installed new windows7 on this 160gig original drive with no problem.
I also updated dell bios to the latest and AHCI is on.
The hitachi 500gig drives are now show in my pc as unknown device.
I highly suspect corrupted firmware.

I also replaced my defected dvd drive, and boot a windows cd with it, so I'm almost sure which mainboard and sata port is ok.
I suspect some kind of hard incompatibility with my mainboard onboard storage controller chipset .
how can i overwrite the hdd firmware with no special hardware tool.

try putting the new drive back in, and in bios, find Disk controller settings set it to "IDE mode" or "legacy mode" or whatever the OTHER setting to AHCI is.

If you put the new drive back into the desktop, what happens?

new drive behavior on my pc;
motor not spinning under no circumstance.
bios detect it with wrong name, it shows firmware version as hdd name!
windows 8 device manager shows it under DISKDRIVES with UNKNOWNDEVICE name!
WinDFT software by hgst company, shows the capacity as 0 !
DiskManagement in ComputerManagement shows the capacity 2 TB ! not initialized.(original physical size is 500gig though)
try to initialize and it shows an I/O initialization error, and obviously no partition allocated!
Also I tried to connect it with a sataTOusb convertor and get similar results.

very strange and frustrating, cuz i upgraded tons and tons of laptops , replacing ram, hdd, sdd, even cpu on some models with no problem.
And now i've 2 dead brand new drives on my hand, with no rational explanation!
I must repeat myself, the seagate st9160310as works ok both on this laptop and my pc.
I think we must rule out any mainboard defect here.

There is a perfectly rational explanation. It's power related from the computer's power supply. Possibly the older drive was able to handle whatever is wrong with the power and the new ones aren't. I'd guess it's either too high or too low of voltage. It should be putting out 5V (and maybe 12V though most laptop drives don't use it), do you have a way to test it?

I had a desktop computer once that worked fine for years. HDD started acting up so I went to replace it, and immediately killed the new drive (it actually smoked). Turned out to be a bad power supply that was putting out a really high voltage on the 5V channel. Test it and see.

but dell inspiron 1545 is a laptop.
and as we all know data sata and power connectors are soldered to laptop mainboard.
and this laptop works with battery and/or an external charger adapter obviously.
however laptop aside, how can i get back this drives to working order again.
I highly suspect corrupted firmware on them.
how can i overwrite/repair/update the hdd firmware with no special hardware tool?
Where are the f/w files and how it can be done?
