Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

Hi,
I have a hard drive with an unknown file system. I need to make a clone of the drive to keep my data save before experimenting on it.
Most software recovery tool do not recognize this drive, but HDD Raw copy tool does recognize it(because HDD raw copy is files system independent as I understand).
However, the tool misinforms the user(me) with the capacity. It show as 500GB where as at the same time windows disk management show as 3726 GB(close to 4TB as this is a 4TB drive). This makes me skeptical about this tool. Any one knows why is this the case?
