win8.1 in its brain dead arrogant approach decided to write protect my flash drive
now i cant use it except to read the one file that is on it

there is NO hardware switch on the drive to protect it

how can i tell the drive to undo the write protection. hopefully a utility as i have not found any commands etc. in win to do it.

how can i tell win8.1 to keep its bleeping hands off my devices and to stop doing anything unless i told it to do something to them

I have the same problem. There are hundreds of answers about this from google. None of them work.
Fixing the registry fails because it does not have the items noted.
Changing attributes fails because they do not show up in the commands.
Microsoft has a registry fix that will work for that computer -- if your version of windoze has that registry entry.
Some people think it is bad hardware and to toss the item. Too expensive when they all get locked this way.
Some answers place blame elsewhere.
But still many many people still have the same problem.

Formatting is a possibility. We can read the data and back it up. Then a format might restore the drive.
I am holding off on that option until I can be sure there is not an easier way.

Hopefully somebody here is willing to share their knowledge and actually knows about fixing the problem.

Full disclosure: 45+ year veteran with computers and still trying to keep up with the changes. Too hard to be perfect and know everything these days.

Thanks in advance for any useful help anyone will share.

Sometimes a drive will revert to read-only mode when it has run out of spare blocks. That's a function (feature?) of its firmware, not anything that the OS has done.

Thanks. Mine was a brand new 8G drive with only one small text file on it. Unless it was defective from the factory then there should be some spare blocks left, I would hope.

Guessing as both banned usernames mention 1 file on the drive, it is the same person. Wonder if the one small textfile was a crypto wallet... in that case 1 single copy is ludicrous. Anyway, high chance these were Kingston devices. Seen it a lot. I never buy kingston flash / SSDs unless for research.
Agree with fzabkar, and add that they can do this full or not, more than likely firmware or their circuit is flawed and drive stops working properly. If possible, copy off data and throw the drive out.
