| Post subject: | What Linux flavor to use Ddrescue and or other tools? |
Hi everyone, what Linux flavor is better to work with ddrescue for example? I´ve heard Ubuntu would "mount" the drives, maybe Kali would be better? Or just a live CD like systemRescueCD? What your thoughts on this matter? Thanks. |

The distributions you are most used to work with. Any linux will mount the drives when you issue the mount commands. Hddsuperclone has its own livecd, don´t know if ddrescue has one. If you prefer, you can use any Livecd or usb boot drive with linux. It all depends on knowing how to use it ( you will need to mount the drive where you want to save the image, for example ) |

It would depend on what you planning to do. If you just want to use it for a one time recovery, or just occasionally, you may want to use a live CD. But if you plan on repeated work then you would want to install some version of Linux. Every standard flavor of Linux will have auto mount turned on, but most should have a way to turn it off in the settings. So if you want to install it, look up how to disable automatic mounting for your choice of Linux (it will be different between them). If you choose to go with a live CD, then you would want a special one that does not auto mount. SystemRescueCD will almost certainly not do any sort of auto mounting, and in fact will require you to perform terminal commands to mount anything. That is good if you are comfortable with always using terminal commands to do things. HDDLiveCD (for HDDSuperClone) has the settings set to not auto mount, but it is possible to click on the device in the file manager to mount it. It is more convenient. Any standard live CD will just auto mount like the OS flavor it is based on. |

@maximus, your HDDLiveCd is Ubuntu-based, isn´t it ? I´m somewhat sure I didn´t configure anything in Ubuntu to prevent auto-mounting ( 12.04, 14.04 ) . The behaviour I see here is like you describe, that it will mount only if I click in the drives in the file manager . But when working only through a terminal, or just starting the machine and then hddsuperclone, nothing is mounted. Oh, to complete myself, USB drives get auto-mounted. Only SATA and IDE volumes don´t. |

I did have some issues with the settings in some of my past versions, which did not turn the automounting off properly. It should not even automount a USB flash drive, but it will show up in the file explorer, and also likely on the desktop, where it could be clicked on to mount. Just using a standard Ubuntu live CD will not turn off automounting. I do think that it may not automount hard connected disks that are present at boot, but anything connected afterwards will automount, even power cycling a SATA drive could automount it (assuming the BIOS is not set to IDE, as IDE is not plug and play and won't show up after booting). |

i use fedora linux i preinstall everything on a boot disk testdisk- ddrescue- photorec and the disk manager allows bit by bit cloning it works on macbook surface pros and you can use a amazing tool called Dislocker for accusing bitlocker |
