Seagate ST500DM002 Barracuda "Failed to read Sector "0"

November 5th, 2018, 18:21

Device info:
3.5" Seagate ST500DM002 Barracuda 500GB
Serial: Z3TRSXRN
P/N: 1BD142-303
Firmware: kc48
STX: 720012(b)
==========================================================
Procedures that I made:

- Check Seagate Website to new firmware or update - Doesn't exist for this version drive.
- Download tools like: seatools for windows, seatools for DOS, discwizard for windows. (done)

Seatools for windows:

- Quick test (DST Short) - Pass ! ok
- Generic short - failed !!
- Generic long full - failed !!
- other options - risk for loose data or impossible to do.

Seatools for DOS, via USB boot:

- System/application open appropriately, but after confirm "terms of use", application try to load drive, so FAILED !!
Advice: impossible to recover bad sectors, drive can NOT be read.

Seagate DiscWizard Tool For Windows:

- Clone device for another HDD - FAILED!! *** Message: Failed to read from sector "0".
- So, impossible to apply any other option.

============================================================

Linux OS:

I try to clone the device via "dd" application. So linux system can NOT find HDD into /dev/sd"N"....impóssible mount or read device.

****Impossible to clone without read device.

=============================================================

More Information:

- Seagate ST500DM002 of 500GB can't read sector "0".Then, show only 3.83GB as total storage in the Seatools application.
- Windows unable to recognize HDD. Impossibility to provide a drive letter.
- Windows unable to recognize HDD when I use SATA cable normally as a intern HDD.

===============================================================

I hope somebody help me with that !!

if there is someone with the app "HD doctor for seagate" and can share it, please, send for my email.

Hi Northwind,

Any idea how fix this?

regards,

Yes, it needs clean room work.
You need to have compatible donor and swap the heads. By saying "you" I mean someone who knows what he's doing and has the proper equipment, experience and knowledge.
It's not DIY in any case.

Until my tests to finish, move head or disk are my last options. On my region there isn't clean room or good service to do that. Therefore, I'm here to get some support/help with professionals. If you know how to fix it & can share, you are welcome my friend. Any suggestion, procedure, tools, orientation is Welcome tool.

ps.: there isn't any bad sound coming from the disk or head at moment.

I know how to fix it and I've already told you.
The heads are gone and the drive needs clean room work.
Again, not what you want to hear, sorry about that.

If the data is important, you need to send it out to a decent DR lab. You can't fix it yourself :(
If the data is not important, bin it, move on and don't buy such a crappy drive again.

Good luck.
