Does the drive contain data that you need ?

Did the drive letter disapeared from one moment to the other ?

Maybe the drive does have bad sectors and partition is messed up ?

It's internal or external drive ? If extrernal did you try on another computer ?

Can you check S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive using for example Victoria for Windows ?

Is this a 3.5 SATA drive ? If so plug it to your MRT and see if you can image the drive at decent speed (assuming of course you do have MRT).

What is the full model of the drive itself ?

Maybe it does have pending sectors and slow issue preventing it from detection ?

What are the register status that you do get on MRT ?

Lacking MRT you can use something like WDMarvel to attempt to patch the firmware if needed but you must first make sure about what problem the drive does have !!!

Is the data of any value to you or you just want to fix the drive ?

Are you willing to pay for data recovery ?

Does the drive make starnge clicking noises when working ?

What is the PCB number ?

If your PCB is not known to have problems i would bet on firmware issues (like the slow issue) but i would need to have the drive to be certain about it's problem.

At least windows still detect the disk with full capacity so i would bet either on problematic PCB or most likely bad sectors and pending sectors causing the firmware to lock in background processes....

If the data is not needed just replace the drive.
