I did not have much luck trying to read the flash of several HDDs using flashrom and a CH341a programmer. In one case at least an unknown chip was found but no specific model. There are other programmers like tl866 which have support for more chips afaik. Are there maybe alternatives? Does it work in general without desoldering?
