Hello,
Before I brought my brand-new External HD, a LaCie QUADRA d2 V2.1 1 TB (product code 301442) into use, I would like to have the Health status. This ext. HD has 4 different ports. USB2, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSATA. I have purchased this type of HD for the high speed throughput of eSATA.
I tested the health condition of the disk with HDTune, HDDScan and CrystalDiskInfo. These programs analyse the S.M.A.R.T. data, (mostly) available in a HD. These programs show the data in a table. The data were similar when I used the USB 2.0 port and the FireWire port. Their conclusion: Health Status GOOD.
I have two remarks reading all tables. - All programs give a warning (not a failure) about the UltraDMA CRC Error Count. I followed the programs advice to use another cable. Same result. How strongly do I have to worry about this warning?
- All programs place the name of the disk they detect in the header of the table. Two programs found SAMSUNG HD103SJ 1000.2 GB, another program told it was a LaCie d2 quadra (1000gB)
By using the eSATA port of the ext. HD the conclusion of the programs was completely the opposite. One program could only produce an ERROR message, the other program produced a table with several lines of text like "unknown attribute .... Failed" and a status message "Error! Threshold reached". And "Replacing the hard drive is recommended".
I use this ext. HD on a PC with Windows XP, SP3 I connect only one port at a time between the ext. HD and the PC. Both my internal SATA HD's passed the tests with flying colours.
This is my first experience with ext. HD with eSATA. So I ask myself if SMART- and other data should be reliable read from the ext. HD with eSATA. Writing a file to the ext. HD and reading it back seems to be ok.
Perhaps there is somebody on the forum who is owner of such a external HD type LaCie QUADRA d2 V2.1
I appreciate very much your reactions in advance.
