Hi,
i have kind of an awkward situation here, any help would be appreciated.
My dad wanted to do a LLF on his harddrives. As he doesnt speak english and is not much of a computer literate, i instructed him over the phone.
So far everything went fine, but now he wants to install a new version of Windows XP on his freshly formatted drive.
The copy of Windows comes right from the store, so this should definitely work. But after the first reboot during the installation, the Windows setup brings up an error message, that there is a "boot failure". After doing the installation several times from scratch with me on the phone, i'm absolutely sure, he got things right, but nevertheless the Windows setup stops everytime with the message above (i have done the Windows setup countless times myself, so i know how this works).
Please note that the harddisk was partitioned and formatted (by the setup software) prior to the installation without errors.

Is there anything you need to do after performing a LLF to reset the drive?
Could the LLF process in any way damage the drive itself?
Any ideas?

Thank you in advance...
void

Check the list of boot devices in the BIOS.

If you've changed it so the system boots from CD, maybe the HDD option has been missed out. So the PC does not even try to boot from HDD 0.

Also, a few other things to check...

1) A Bad HD can give weird errors and/or crashes during install.

2) Likely not a scratched disc if it's new, but it could also be a bad CD Drive. If his machine has two drives, tell him to try the other one.

after swapping the harddisk with another one the setup has now completed successfully.
This means that the first disk must be damaged. This seems a bit unlikely to me, since this disk was working until right before the LLF.
Could the LLF have damaged the disk?

Anyway, thanks for your help so far.

It could be the drive was already bad, but went unnoticed. When I fixed computers for a living, this was a semi-common occurance, where someone would try reinstalling windows (Usually, because of problems, likely caused by the failing drive), and was unable to. Although I never investigated it more, I came across a drive or two that tested Ok, yet could not install Windows onto it.
