Hello,

I tried downloading the hdderase iso image and id oes not include the hdderase program.

The iso presents a boot menu with some emm/xms configs. emm does not work on mys system but xms does so the third option is usable.

The CD boots, unpacks some archives, tries loading some CD drivers and fails.

Neither the flopy image nor the ramdisk contain the hdderase binary.

The current downloadable from the HDDErase web page (at UCSD) is a zip file - where are you getting your ISO image from?

The downloadable zip file does include the hdderase.exe program.

From the zip file, of course.

Yeah, that's so totally useful when you can't run it on anything and it's not available when you boot from the CD.

You can unpack the CD, put the file on the floppy image and repack, and then you can run the software and it just locks up.

The drive is frozen so cannot be erased with normal tools.

I would be really interested how that freeze-prevention of hdderase mentioned in the howtos works but I cannot run it on my system.

Why "of course"? I can't read your mind. HDDErase is available in other ISOs, so how am I supposed to know which one you are using, without asking? I choose not to spend my valuable time replying to people who request help (for free!) but are then sarcastic, so I'll leave you to get help from other readers.

Perhaps by the fact I am replying to a thread which offers this zip file download into which you obviously looked too.

But maybe it is customary to post in irrelevant topics in this forum, I new here.

As you post under different nick than the original author and the likehood of you disassembling the tool and understanding what it does is low I am not particularly concerned.

Bzzzt! Wrong guess, but thanks for playing. Actually there are two easier ways to reverse-engineer what the program does, which are even quicker than disassembling it, and there's an even quicker way to perform a Secure Erase on a "frozen" disk than struggling with HDDErase, but anyway...

Of course! You didn't previously say that you only wanted the original author to reply. Since you're new here, I'll show you how we address comments to one person on this forum. You're welcome. :)

@dencee - Over to you. As you can see, this person specifically wants only you to reply.

Hi,

HDDErase v4.0 @ http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml is throwing a 404 (probably because the NSA is no longer supporting Dr. Hughes research, so he and his grad students can no longer support/host the software)

Do you have an alternative link? If not I can host on my site if you wish?

Richard

I'm actually writing an article on DBAN, but want to also do one on Secure Erase sometime.
