Check this out. The screws sheered right off. I was wondering what that rattling was.

Was that caused by the VCM hitting the end stops repeatedly? Or had the user opened the drive before, and caused that damage themselves?

The drive was unopened. I picked it up and I could hear a clunking inside. This was of the era of drives sealed with metalized tape. The base of the drive must have been made with the powdered metal process which is notorious for having weak points. I'll have to do more research on the manufacturing processes used.

After looking at the drive again I think the aluminum was cast in some method. I'm thinking die cast.

I have seen this exact problem over the years. I think it was a weak weld point

Thanks for explaining - having those loose parts inside can't be good!
