The state of the industry is the way it is because of the companies who manufacture the products. Why don't you ask them to release all their proprietary info with instructions and fully-illustrated guides?
In an ideal world, every product would be provided with a downloadable copy of the repair manual. That's something for the planet conscious Greenies to campaign for. In fact I can still remember when every TV set, and many other appliances, had circuit diagrams tucked into a pouch inside the cabinet. The fact is, most modern equipment isn't economical to repair. Outside of the warranty period, the only thing that keeps most stuff out of our landfills is DIY.
BTW, Feklar was experimenting on an expendable drive. I guess even "gurus" had to do the same when they were just DR wannabes.
