Seagate Terminal might be the right tool, if you an find an appropriate firmware cert and overlay in the downloads section or elsewhere, and it appears to have the factory certification and other tests available, but I haven't used it much, and its all in Russian.
Here is the English documentation:
http://sediv2008.narod.ru/HelpEn.rar (documentation)

Discussion:
sediv-hdd-seagate-terminal-for-windows-t11980.html

The demo version is time limited. You will probably see a message in Russian which translates to "This version is outdated". If so, then set your system date back to around April 28, 2009 (date stamp of SeDiv.exe).

Information wants to be free. I know that doesn't sit well for many members of the DR community, but that's not my problem.

It's funny how you can find books that expose the secrets of open heart surgery and thermonuclear weaponry, but there are no books that will teach you how to repair a $100 hard drive.

I'm sure that makes this guy feel a lot better:

What someone chooses to do with information is not for you or I to decide.

In fact, a comprehensive book on the subject is definitely in order. I'm sure if someone was to write one, they could put away their DR tools and spend the remainder of their life on some South Pacific island, banking their cheques.

Yeah, I guess if you leave a loaded gun on the counter at an elementary school and some kid shoots himself that's not really your fault either. No wonder Seagate is getting rid of the serial terminal. I would too if I were them. Its only a matter of time before someone reads about it on the internet and kills their drive and then tries to sue Seagate for letting them.

The state of the industry is the way it is because of the companies who manufacture the products. Why don't you ask them to release all their proprietary info with instructions and fully-illustrated guides?

In an ideal world, every product would be provided with a downloadable copy of the repair manual. That's something for the planet conscious Greenies to campaign for. In fact I can still remember when every TV set, and many other appliances, had circuit diagrams tucked into a pouch inside the cabinet. The fact is, most modern equipment isn't economical to repair. Outside of the warranty period, the only thing that keeps most stuff out of our landfills is DIY.

BTW, Feklar was experimenting on an expendable drive. I guess even "gurus" had to do the same when they were just DR wannabes.

Which is going to do what exactly, now that the SA is damaged?

SeDIV demo won't bring back to life the drive neither other tool 'straight away' , so it's only BULLSHIT. I do mass repair of drives, and when it came to Seagate, it took months of experiment and collaboration with at least two members of this forum that spent much more time than me. The procedure is more complex than you think if you want to rebuild from scratch the sa, recalculate and tune drive, require time and is also not guaranteed to work. With commercial tools like Pc3000 that directly communicate with the drive is less difficult, otherwise you have to find a way yourself - did both. The Op need a procedure, not a link to limited tools or details that are useful as a dick on a cow.

SeDiv demo is not intended to fix anything. That's why it's a demo. Duh!

It allows a novice to examine a drive in readonly mode, with relative safety.

BTW, you really ought to see somebody about your preoccupation with bovine genitalia.

If there's someone preoccupied / preoccupanting is you. Did you do something for yourself, instead ?

It would probably help if you shared what you were doing to the drive, in addition to the terminal output.

Which test?

Probably you have erased the SA.

So after "esamining the drive in readonly mode, with relative safety" the result is the same : screwed SA. Nothing new, eh ?

@grigoree, to cut a long story short and maybe close the thread :

1) the info you need/want can't be given openly at least not by the pros here.
2) face the reality : to work decently you need some tooling OR work out "some solution" to do it with the few thing you have. It is possible but it will be much more difficult and less easy / user friendly.
3) tinkering with commands can give bad results (there is at least one command of one letter that kills instantly your drive in less than 3 seconds)
4) if you really want to do something with seagates and have some fun (it is interesting to discover how these drives work) you can document yourself and in a little time you can do great things, including bringing back to life "dead" drives.
5) the best way probably is to ask for someone who can remotely use teamviewer to connect and see your drive in realtime.

@drc : it seems the result of incautious SS starting from 2 or wrong APP sent don't know how - or simply a screwed SA.

That was my guess.

These commands, to my very limited knowledge regarding the terminal and the command set, might damage your drive even worse than it already is. Do research: Google and Google Translate is your friend, as are the Russian and Chinese sites where posting of actual information to experimenters or students of the art is more commonplace. As far as the Seagate 20 gig I was experimenting on, I know what I did: I cycled the power too fast without waiting for an operation to complete. When trying an unknown command, if it doesn't return a reply and a prompt, learn well to wait, perhaps hours, before power cycling the drive.

I am just starting into this area myself, but near as I can tell,

vCCCC
fCCCC
vAAAA
FAAAA

one of those could reload from the reserve tracks. Not sure which yet.

possibly followed by
j,,1 <--- should be harmless

possibly followed by W or one of the e commands, which appear so far to me to be highly potentially dangerous commands.

Like I said, do your research: I may be entirely mistaken and these commands could kill off your drive.

Spelling error above, should be fAAAA, not FAAAA. Luckily in F> level it shouldn't hurt to type it wrong, but I guess usually one small slip in typing somewhere and adios amigo.

The Google site directive is your friend.

site:http://forum.hddguru.com/ seagate terminal

results in

http://www.google.com/search?q=http%3A% ... a61d5b9175

Which is very useful, since Google translate doesn't always let you use a site's search function.

site:http://forum.ru-board.com/ "j,,1" seagate

then click "translate this page" for each hit.
