I think Tape drives have no file system . I am sure no software (hard disk recovery) will be able to give access to data area.
There aren't softwares except emag mediamerge pc . vogon ( now ontrack company) was specialised in tape conversion.
They have developed there own hardware for the same.
I doubt anyone will be able to recover /convert tape with commercial softwares. Only super gurus who can write there own codes will be able to do this.

Tape drives themselves do not have a file system, that's correct. It's the tape backup software that will have a file system. Complexity of the file system will depend on the vendors product. Yes there are some issues, but it's not required to be a super guru. Only dealing with partially overwritten tape drives requires super guru status.

Data is written on Tapes in blocks and most of the softwares are linux / unix based. Recovery from such tapes is not possible.

Why not?

Unfortunately we have a strict no spoon feeding policy, so I can not provide a step by step procedure on this, but ntbackup is the most well documented backup file type, and therefore also the easiest to recovery. It really should not be a problem. If the tape is fine you can try and restore it with windows natively, otherwise there are plenty of tools to help you with this.

Hi quasimodo
Unfortunately in windows restore (ntbackup) it shows date of backup ,but does not go further. I tried to take dump of tape
but no commercial software is even capable to give access to tape sectors.
If ntbackup fails , how can i image tape? a slight hint will save customers data.
thanks.

There is one other software package I know of that is called 'NovaXchange'.
It does about the same as MediaMerge but for a fraction of the price.

The reason recovery is not possible of what you are describing is because of the tape itself and whatever issues it has and not necessarily with another tape that is "working" condition. Therefore, recovery as a process is possible, just not in your case.

Hello labtech
In this case drive and media are working. I checked with other cartridge and by scanning in mediamerge. I could restore other tapes except this one. Will try NovaXchange as suggested by gixxxer

Hi gixxxer
I checked with novastore ,they said NovaXchange does not support such type of work. tapecopy could be useful in such cases. However no evaluation version is available for tapecopy.

In my experience, the hardware (tape drive itself that you are using for recovery) matters a great deal....think of it this way: some tape drives have capabilities that other don't. Same thing is true for most media types. Software alone is not the answer...some tape drives I have won't succeed, despite being fully operational....whereas other scsi units WILL read the same tape(s)...some support commands/options/features that others don't....Next, if imaging/recovery is possible, then a good tape unit and linux os should suffice for most common MTF recoveries IMHO....as most programs like NTbackup, Veritas,Norton, etc. use Microsoft format....on the other hand, if it's another proprietary format like Arcserve, etc, then you will likely need something like MediaMerge anyway...hope this helps...

Thanks a lot pcrecovery , I can do recovery once the tape content is dumped / imaged on hard disk , however cretaing image is basic hurdle as I am unable to get access to tape sectors & not getting right imaging tool.

Hey all, I know this thread is a couple of months old but I have some info that people were asking about which may help.

I managed to get a quote for MMPC, they charge 10,500 GBP for the license, then annual renewal is 15%.

There is another tool called Octane for Backup made by a US company called Index Engines. This is a mixed hardware software solution, they charge $12,500 US for the hardware which comes preinstalled with the software on it. You supply your own tape drives then the software does the rest. There is no annual renewal (I think) but you pay per tape you download. They have apparently quite a complicated pricing system and they were unwilling to tell me the pricing without me giving them more information and wanting to have a teleconference with me. Seems they try the hard sell a bit much which annoyed me so I haven't got back to them yet.

NovaXchange is a cheap option at just over $1,200 US but my information direct from Novastor is that NovaXchange can't read any type of backup format,
Quote:
NovaXchange can read ASCII and EBCIDIC data and convert between the two. It cannot open say a Backup Exec backup file and read the files inside that backup type.

That is a direct quote from an email I received last week from Novastor...

The other option (which is the approach I will be taking until I can justify the buying the Octane solution) is to purchase a couple of the newer USB tape drives, then waiting until I have the tape in hand then purchase the same software the tape was created with. Restore the tape to a fresh drive then use Xways to analyse the data from there.

chipsang hopefully something there is of use to you :)

@labtech, that website looks too generic to be trustworthy. I have some travan tape with damaged headers/crumpled up tape. Any reliable tape data recovery company out there?
