Hello everyone,

First of all let me thank you all for the valuable information provided on this thread, I can consider myself fortunate not to have lost all my data by confusing "sync" and "backup", but I seem to have lost most of it anyway :-/

My problem is as follows:

Having synced to my WD passport with Dmailers WDsync software my XP laptop recently died a sudden death, but my data still exists under a profile with a folder "Sync.3.1.deposit" plus "Sync.3.1.option" and "Sync.3.1.db" files, and about 60,000 .dml and .dml.rmv files, which take up about 30GB on the passport.

I have plugged the WD into a new XP machine, created a new profile, and tried to "Copy to PC" from my original profile (invisible to WDSync and the decryption tool until I renamed everything Sync.4.0...) but although the 7000 folders are correctly recreated, they only contain only 8 files.

Thanks to the info on this thread, the Dmailer decryption tool has recovered around 50,000 files, but even after using TRID the data I really need is still "unknown", and the lack of filenames renders the rest useless, except photos.

My question is this: Is there a way to make "Copy to PC" work correctly?

Given that my original sync folder was named "...3.1.deposit", I wonder whether the fact that I was using an earlier version of WDSync.exe could cause these issues, but I recently tried all previous versions of WDsync from Dmailers website, and although I can again see all the folders (and 8 files...) using version 5 with the profile Sync data folder, db and options set to "3.1", the problem remains. I have also tried Unlocker, to no avail.

Thank you in advance for any help, or information that anyone can provide.

DMailer (the company that makes WD Sync) finally has all the info you really need on their website: https://support.dmailer.com/client/cont ... ontact.jsp

On their contact/support page, put in "Sync" as the product and "Data loss" as the Category.

If this doesn't work, you can try to PM me, but I don't get on here often.

Good luck!

Hey guys and gals
i was just passing though and i know that this is an old subject but with my information maybe it will help someone else in time ,im not trying to be a jerk or a smarty or anything else but ill get to the subject wd passport is great software . this is how to get back your data and all of it ..lets just say it you Synchronized a file that had 12 other files in it when you Synchronize something ,WDSync will always make copies of it so that if they get deleted from your pc they will be in the folder Western Digital in your program files on your pc not the wdpassport device i noticed everyone was saying that there files were deleted and gone forever not true they are right there in your program file in the Western Digital folder .all you have to do is go to the program files open the Western Digital folder go to this folder WD Sync Data, open it ,then open this folder MyProfile, open it then open this folder Data and then open this folder Sync.4.0.deposit and then open this folder a .wow there they are right there in front of you all of them are .dml files but thats not a problem .now leave the a folder open in the background and go back to your program files and open your Western Digital folder again and look for the WDSync Application and open it ,as soon as it gets open type your password and wow there are all your deleted files with a straight line though then showing they have been deleted so run your mouse over them one at a time and un delete them then go straight up and copy them to a location on your pc and there you are.you dont even have to have your wd passport plugged in to your pc.because they not on it they were deleted from it remember.

old bosley here
have a great day

Thanks old boseley, that's great! It doesn't help me though, as I'm trying to use the WD as "Backup"... ie I don't have the original drive, or program files, or myprofile... :-(

Hi,

i looked through my c:\program files but cannot see the Western Digital WDsync folder mentioned by Boseley (then again, i have always only executed WDsync from the passport device itself.

Anyway, my problem --- like others, i had deleted files in my hard disc, and then accidently used WDsync to synch with my passport device, which then caused the loss of most data in my passport device.

i had been reading all posts in this thread all night and have made some progress :

1. Have used a recovery tool to recover files from my passport. Now i have MyHomeProfile recovered, and inside i see a whole bunch of a/b/c/d.... directory containing .DML files.

2. i have used a batch renaming tool to change all the .DML to .dml.

3. I then downloaded the DataRecoveryTool from dmailer (v2.2.4) and tried to recover the profiles. But unfortunately it keeps telling me that my password is incorrect. I really dont know why it is saying that as i am 99.99% sure i am using the right password.

4. I then opened by passport device and created a new profile (MyRecoveryProfile). I then copied all the .dml files from a/b/c/d directories on my computer to the newly created profile on passport.

5. Great -- good so far. I then used the DataRecoveryTool on the MyRecoveryProfile on my passport. It starts recovery and then immediately crashes. i get the following error msg :

---------------------------------------------
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: DataRecoveryTool_v2_2_4.exe
Application Version: 2.2.4.0
Application Timestamp: 48c7811a
Fault Module Name: CryptoModule.dll
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 48b815df
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00068360
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48
Locale ID: 2057
Additional Information 1: 0a9e
Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789
Additional Information 3: 0a9e
------------------------------------------------

So, my questions are :

1. In step3, i mention that the DataRecoveryTool says that i am entering an incorrect password, though i am certain i am entering the correct password. Could it be possible that the recovery tool i used (RecoverMyFiles) to recover the profile from my Passport device screwed up my password?

2. Has anyone else had this problem where the DataRecoveryTool from dmailer crashed as above?

thanks all.

hi everyone so i'm hoping this will help many as i spent probably the most time ever on this problem specifically...

here's what you'll need.

***I'm assuming you've recovered the drive into a folder elsewhere than the HD (so that you can format it)***

so from here you get the software that'll get you to bypass the password (Data Recovery Tool)
http://www.dmailer.org/download/DataRecoveryTool.zip

and from here you get the software to rename a bunch of files at the same time; as you'll need to rename DML files to be lowercase...i randomly ran into this one and it even had the exact option of changing extension to lowercase...
http://www.snapfiles.com/downloads/aren/dlaren.html

Lastly you'll need the Dmailer Sync (Drive software) from here
https://support.dmailer.com/client/cont ... ontact.jsp
^^Click

pretty much what you need to do now that you've got all this is.

1) Run Recovery to save the crashed drive to a different location
2) Rename batch- all DML to dml
3) Format the crashed drive now that you've got it backed up elsewhere
4) Install the Dmailer Sync on the now formatted drive (Create a profile and password - Skip Registration)
5) Copy everything you backed up BACK on to the drive that now is clean and has a profile and password
6) Now run Data Recovery Tool and have it scan the drive for a profile.

what this does is fool the drive that the new profile with all the old documents belong to one another.
once you provide the password for the profile that it finds it'll unlock everything for you.

only downside to all of this is that it renames automatically everything to random numbers and letters. but at least everything is saved.

Hope this saved all of you a bunch of time as i've burnt nights over making this all come together.

Hi bigeba8 (and everyone else if you're still subscribing)

I've been hit with the same curse of losing data and the mamouth task of trying to retreive. Thanks to this thread it seems that I should be able to recover all files since I haven't used the WD drive since yesterday when it happened.

Using some software I purchased online (Blitware's Undeleter) I can recover some 2000+ files and I appreciate I'll have to change to .dml and remove any underscore symbols in the file names. But without the decryption tool this seems a little academic.

Following the advice on here it seems as though there is a chance I can get the files, however, in trying to acquire the Dmailer data recovery decryption tool, I'm taken to a page that tells me the Dmailer Online Support no longer exists.

The Dmailer "no longer exists" page points you towards another company, YuuWaa, who I've already emailed and I'm waiting on a reply but I'm not holding my breath. Since the photos in question cover the first year and a half of my son's life I'm desperate not to lose the files and recover as much as I possibly can.

Could anyone help with getting hold of the data recovery tool or at least point me in the right direction of how to get it or something similar?

Alternatively, if it seems this is a lost cause owing to Dmailer's lack of support, could anyone suggest a reputable data recovery specialist in London/South East England?

I apologise if there is any info missing on this post, I'm new on here and although fairly computer literate I'm not an expert. Any help or advice would be extremely well received.

Many thanks,

Mike

This is an old support email.........link is as posted above and working good luck!

- Then download the data recovery tool to decrypt your files. This tool is available at this address:
http://www.dmailer.org/download/DataRecoveryTool.zip

When you have downloaded it, here are the steps to use it:
1. Launch it and go to "Profiles->Scan directory"
2. Select your "WD Sync Data" folder containing your synchronized data. You should see all your profiles being listed.
3. Select the profile you wish to synchronize and click "SaveAllTo"

The problem that you had has now been fixed in the latest version of Dmailer Sync and you can no longer loose after a format find out more here:
Dmailer Sync V8

If you need further support with an issue like this contact the Dmailer Support Team:
http://www.dmailer.com

The company is no longer in business. i have tried the recovery software but feel stupid that I am not doing it right. these companies should be sued for losing these files on me. I put faith that their product would save my pictures and such that are on this hard drive. If anyone has found any way to open these files, which i know are still there, please, please please, help. there are pics of my son and family which are irreplaceable. my computer recently crashed and these files were copied to it a while back so of course I didnt worry about reformatting the hard drive on my computer since I thought I had them backed up.

Please if anyone can help..i need it.

brian

Agreed! Companies that create all this type of syncing software and propriety file management stuff need to be held liable in some way, a refund at the least would be nice. It would be equally be helpful to have everything explained concisely and clearly in a printed manual and pdf version.

I've got to do a logical recovery on a passport, now, that was recently given to me. All the info in this thread is a great starting point of what and what not to do. Helps characterize the behavior of that dmailer thing.

For the safety of your information, it is important to avoid propriety encoding and encryption schemes. Just work and make use of the native file system that is on your system. Afterall, that native filing system, NTFS in my case, has been very well documented and debugged. Any issues that are likely to come up have probably been experienced and looked into.

For maximum reliability there should be as few middlemen between your information and the storage medium. All these encoders and containers and managers just make for trouble!

Recover files deleted from Western digital Dmailer Sync

Hello,

I need some help please. As some users I have a very bad surprise with my WD Dmailer Sync. A synchronization has deleted all of my video files of my little daughter !!!

Unfortunately a defragmentation of my hard disc drive on my PC and a mistake has deleted those files also on my hard disc drive ! I’ve tried unsuccessfully to recover them.

So my only way is to restore the deleted files on my WD disc.

I have to find the bin on my WD disc and restore it. I hope it’s possible…

I know that Dmailer does exist anymore but I guess someone has had the same problem as mine. I suppose I’m not the only one who make that ****ing misuse…

So please HELP HELP HELP ! :( :(

I’m must recover those files ! I don’t want to explain my daughter 2020 that I’ve lost all her videos cause I don’t know how to use a drive !!

Thanks.

First step is to make sector by sector image of your drive, then move to recover your deleted files.

I cannot restore files from Dmailer Sync v9 that are located in the root of a synced drive, although these specific files show up fine in the Sync utility. When I choose to 'Copy to PC' these "root" drives, the files look as if they copy over, and then the created drive folder on my PC is empty.

For instance, I have several drives synced, one of which is M:, whose filestructure is as follows:

M:
file1.a
file2.b
file3.c
folder1\
folder1.file1
folder1.file2
folder2\
folder2.file1
folder2.file2
etc...

Everything is "restorable," in its original structure, except file1.a, file2.b, and file3.c. Is there any way (aside from using the infamous DataRecoveryTool) to access these specific files? When I choose to restore them individually, I get a "destination permissions" error, which happens with no other file in any subdirectory. Any advice is very much appreciated!

I find myself in a similar position, and am taking a shot in the dark here. Does anybody have, or know how I can possibly get DataRecoveryTool.zip? It seems to be my last hope.

I'm also wondering if anyone else knows where to locate this software, or has a copy of it somewhere. I'm also in need of the DataRecoveryTool.zip file. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. I know this is an old thread.
