If you suspect PCB - try it, but you would need to transfer ROM.

Is there a way to find out what exactly is wrong with my drive and then decide to have it fixed or toss away?

How to determine if the heads have not gone bad?

Please share you thoughts and expertise.

Here's the fix only for the ST31000528AS 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 Firmware: CC38 model:

Now if your drive is working go and copy quick all the data you can and if not throw it out tho the garbage or send it to the manufacturer.

Shorting read channels:
short the pins shown here
Code:
http://qbhn.neostrada.pl/ST31000528AS.jpg

this is the component side, it goes through the pcb to the other side, I think here
Code:
http://qbhn.neostrada.pl/02.jpg

but not sure - thrust the first image its 100% ok

Thanks everyone. I fixed my ST31000528AS 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 Firmware: CC49 model hdd with help of that and with another command.
At first I have to say my aim for fixing it was to USE it. Not for data recovery but it was surprising when I saw 2. and 3. partitions (with files in them) on my hdd were't deleted after my fix. I used soldering, may be you don't have to but if you will then it is your own risk.
My mobo couldn't see hdd in bios or hot swap. It was after a low voltage and psu failure.
I tried a lot of things but always got an error
Quote:
Rst 0x20M
Servo Processor Is Reset.
RW: Disc Ctlr Initialization Completed.

ExecuteSpinRequest

(P) SATA Reset

Then I looked at connections on the PCB and measered the diots with a cheap and simple multimeter and found these diodes on SATA DATA connection are not working. I soldered them to disable / by-pass them. After soldering; data flows from SATA port to PCB like there is no diode. Don't solder any diode with another one.
Code:
http://img427.yukle.tc/images/3649Clipboard02.jpg

Code:
http://img429.yukle.tc/images/5606Clipboard03.jpg
You can see 3 other diodes next to the ones that I marked. They were running OK in my hdd but if not in yours, you can solder them.
Then I tried the commands with the help of a DKU-5 cable. But I got "Inıt SMART fail" errors and I did like that:
Code:
[Power your hdd with shorting read channels as R0b and bochen415 says like in that image: http://qbhn.neostrada.pl/02.jpg]
Rst 0x20M
Servo Processor Is Reset.
RW: Disc Ctlr Initialization Completed.

[Remove the shorting and give following command]
F3 2>U

F3 2>/

F3 T>m0,2,2,,,,,22
Max Wr Retries = 00, Max Rd Retries = 00, Max ECC T-Level = 16, Max Certify Rewr
ite Retries = not supported

User Partition Format Successful - Elapsed Time 0 mins 00 secs
[If computer or hyperterminal freezes here, disconnect and reconnect both DKU cable(from usb port) and hdd power cable. Then Ctrl+z again.]
F3 T>
ServoDiscSlip Time = 003F13DB
ASCII Diag mode

F3 T>/1

F3 1>N1

Clear SMART is completed.
F3 1>/

F3 T>i4,1,22

F3 T>m0,2,2,,,,,22
Max Wr Retries = 00, Max Rd Retries = 00, Max ECC T-Level = 16, Max Certify Rewr
ite Retries = not supported

User Partition Format Successful - Elapsed Time 0 mins 00 secs

F3 T>

After that I removed DKU-5 cable connections and atteched hdd to computer and restart. It was visible on BIOS and windows saw hdd with all partitions. I tried seagate tools -both windows and dos but couldn't full erase disk to fix bad sectors. I am running hdtune and erasing it, if that won't work, I will learn where bad sectors are with its Error Scan and setup a couple of partitions to use hdd.
good luck.

Dysk,

You will not be able to reply to my PM as you have not accumulated enough posts to have PM-ing privilege.

I can't help without providing some history about the drive, behavior prior to and after failure, do you have the tools you need, what tests have you run and what were the results? Have you issued any commands already (I am NOT suggesting to do so)? If yes, which commands exactly? Etc.

Read the thread from beginning to end and give proper details.

Not always, it's danger only if NRG is filled with some entries, if is empty it's ok to regen translators (m0,2,2,,,,,22).
You may check if NRG is empty with V40 command.

I've got a 7200.12 HD with partial accesibility problem (almost total) 99% bad sectors. I regen translators and the NRG list wasn't empty
The beginning of the bad sectors match with the first entry in the NRG list.
Data isn't very important, just for try... how could I delete the NRG list?

Thanks!

Can anybody help me with almost same problem:

In terminal I got response from disk:

Rst 0x20M
No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 2002B001
ASCII Diag mode

I have tried to proceed SMART data cleaning same way as for 7200.11, but no success on step F3 1> N1... Disk gives back infinite "LED:000000CC FAddr:0024E2DB...."

As I see here 7200.12 has to have other sequence.
Help, please, 10 years archive of photos can be stolen, disk stopped to be recognized by BIOS

Quick question, is the process of covering the pins same as 7200.11 it's just that the process of entering into hyperterminal is a little different?

I have a ST31000528AS that is stills spinning, recongized by the BIOS but will not boot into windows if it is attached, I tried putting it into a usb enclosure without any success as well.

Thanks!

No need to do anything with the pins. Your problem seems to be something else, bad sectors. Use MHDD for basic diagnostic.

You don't think it's one of the firmware problems? The drive is not a boot drive, I boot win from a SSD and this is a storage. When it's plugged in, windows won't boot from the SSD, once removed, windows boot successfully. I tried taking it out and the computer won't recognize it for some weird reason.

It gets stuck and Start Windows Logo right before login.

hmmm doesn't seem like I can edits my own posts. Anyway, I just tried using an external enclosure, it takes forever but a drive letter is assigned when I click on the drive, explorer just stop responding. In Disk Management, it gets stuck at connecting to virtual disk service

I would stop working with anything USB and Windows all together. Waste of time and further potentially damaging the drive. Connect via SATA directly. Hope you don't just have a laptop.

You seem reluctant using MHDD, so the simplest "let's see" at this point is taking a picture of the drive's parameters showing in BIOS and load here for review.

Thanks for the response Labtech. So, I took your advice this morning and burned a MHDD bootable CD. I was able to boot the CD, but the MHDD was not able to recognize the hard drive. I also have a 7200.11 750gb seagate drive that works fine, but MHDD didn't recognize it either. Primary or Secondary Port, or something like PC 3000

All my drives are on SATA, including BD-RE drive, so I thought maybe I needed it on a different SATA controller. I have an Intel SATA 2/3 controller and a Marvell SATA 3 controller. I made sure my BD-RE drive was on the Marvell and the hard drive on the intel controller, and MHDD still doesn't recognize it.

In the computer Bios, only the model number is recognized, my bios doesn't show drive size, I have a Gigabyte Z68 board.

Yes I am living dangerously with these old seagate drives, they are more like my scratch drives directly connected to the computer, my RAID-6 NAS with 6 drives is actually my primary storage. It's been a little while since I backed up the 1TB drive to my NAS, it would be nice to be able to verify that there is nothing I really need on it.
