Hello all,

The first time I've seen one of these in, just received in a few minutes ago. Amazing what they are packing into 7mm.

Drive reaches RDY after about 3 to 4 seconds. Provides ID in PC3000, but Utility does not detect codename, and I presume that Tech mode unlocking is not yet offered on this series:

Firmware : SBK2
Capacity : 1 863.02 GB (3 907 029 168)

Any sector reads with UNC. Drive sounds OK and remains spinning after power on.

Looks like a possible issue with System file 346 or possibly the media cache. Though I'd lean toward 346 since it's not getting stuck busy. You'll have to have the latest version of PC-3000 to get around the "diagnostic port locked" issue first though.

Nice idea, but I very much doubt pc3k will support FW unlocking on this model :-(

Although I don't have one of these to test, didn't even know they existed!!! :-)

PC3000 is up to date with the October release. Currently there is no support for this series of HDD according to ACE TS, and it is currently under development.

I had a PM from some making a suggestion about settings in data extractor that allow for reading small amounts of data (from his own experience), but it has not worked for me. Creating a head-map works OK in DE, but regardless of the settings just UNC gets returned.

Very frustrating being locked out of these drives.

Yeah, the Media Cache is corrupted. Drive family is Rosewood, I can access FW on these drives.

The customer decided to not proceed with the recovery attempt. Consequently it has been possible to investigate other aspects of the HDD. These look like a horrible design for dealing with heads. Aside from how compact it is inside the top magnet is effectively part of the lid of the HDD (covered in silver foil), which is then joined with the actual lid with silver foil sticker. Moreover, for these drives to be sealed correctly requires the silver foil which runs around the drive to be intact. Of course this has to be cut through to access the HDA. There are some areas of the lid which are effectively just silver warranty foil, meaning that in certain areas it would be possible to penetrate the HDA with a sharp object like a needle very easily (I suppose older drives do have foil only access points on the side and underside of the HDD). But all in all these look tricky to deal with, and especially hard if a PC shop or individual decides to start tinkering.

As far as I am aware scratchy was able to read and write to the SA using his method. He was also due to swap the heads out of one today - I'm keen to know how it went.

the drive has some head failure almost surely, plus it is locked, has signed fw, pc3k can't work with it, but of course it is possible to get around the problem.

Undoubtly, pepe (Peter) was the first to unlock signed drives. I guess the log from huangmiaofang has nothing to do with "know-how" unlocking methods.
