 Post subject: Overvoltage Old IDE Drive WD800BB

I plugged in a laptop power supply instead of the 12V :( .
It is a Western Digital External HDD, I need help fixing it, thanks!

Those boards have no protection. The SMOOTH chip is probably dead.

How about the external enclosure circuit?
Also, If I replace the board, will the Hard Drive still work?

If you connect your USB-PATA bridge PCB on its own, can you see it with UVCView or USBDeview?

The 5V and 12V wires are fine. U4 measures 3.3V and 5V at those positions. And plugging the USB into my computer doesn't show in USBDeview. Thanks.

ISTM that if the drive doesn't spin up when the correct voltages are applied, then it must be faulty.

At Q8 it reads 5V, at C68 both are 0.02V, At where it is supposed to be 3.3V it reads 0.57V. At the 1.2Vs it reads no voltage.

Those voltages are all controlled by the SMOOTH chip. This means that the SMOOTH chip is most likely dead (assuming it is receiving its 12V and 5V supplies). I'd say that a PCB swap would be your best option. You may also need to transfer U12 from patient to donor.

Does the PCB shut down your PSU?

Test the resistances of the two TVS diodes (D4 and D3) and the zero-ohm resistors (R64 and R67).

Measure the voltages at V1, V2, V3 and Vneg.

The 12V TVS Beeps when set to continuity, so I think that means that it is bad. 5V TVS Diode reads 220 on the 2000k Ohms setting. 0 Ohms resistors measure 0 ohms. And PCB gets very hot and no led light shows when plugged into this power supply:

Also, I just tested that power supply, it works with a another HDD, so the power supply has no problem.

If D4 is shorted, then R64 cannot be 0 ohms, otherwise the power supply would shut down and the HDD PCB would not get hot.

Perhaps there is a low resistance across the 12V supply elsewhere on the PCB. Does the SMOOTH chip get very hot? What is the resistance between the 12V and ground pins at the SATA power connector? Measure this on the 200 ohms range.

Resistance between 12V and Ground pins on SATA power connector is 1.4 ohms on 200 ohms range. The SMOOTH chips does not get hot, the heat is coming near R64.

Remove D4 and hope for the best. Test the PCB off the drive.

How do you recommend removing D4? I tried using a soldering iron but it didn't work.
