Hi to everyone, i have a broken seagate hdd which my phd thesis' files are inside. I appreciate if someone identifies what the problem is. When i plug it to power, the head moves forward and back several times (like 20 secs) and than it stops spinning. Thank in advance for every help.

Assuming that you are screwed without the thesis, you should stop messing with your drive and contact a reputable data recovery lab.

The problem is the dust particles. Harddisks should only be opened in cleanrooms with dust-free air.

In addition, when the lid is closed there is air pressure inside the drive allowing the heads to "float" on a cushion of air, thus not touching the platters.

Your problem most likely in bad heads. I would recommend to go to pro.
