Hi,

I have an ADB HD PVR 5743-CDX cable TV tuner from Canal Digital (Norway) and after reading online that the 500GB disk could be replaced successfully I wanted to give it a go. Before I went ahead and purchased a new disk I took an spare Samsung HD204UI disk and tested that. Since it worked fine I purchased a WD green AV disk and installed that in the tuner.

After removing the Samsing disk from the tuner I wanted to use it in a PC. Unfortunately the tuner has protected the disk with an ATA password. I have tried unlocking it with the Samsung master password that several sites refer to (32 t's), but that does not work.

The question then is: Does anyone have any idea what user password the ADB 5743-CDX tuner sets? I know this is a long shot...
Alternatively, does anyone have a suggestion on how to unlock the drive with a valid master password? Please note that I do not have any specialist equipment available.

Kind regards
Ken

You can as well grab a copy of WDMarvel (DEMO) and read module 02 of the WD Green drive.

Assuming your Cable TV BOX will lock all drives with the same password as soon as you read config of your WD locked drive you will have the password to unlock the samsung.

WDMarvel - Heads - Edit Config.

Thanks for the quick response!

I thought I could test this on the original WD drive from the tuner. Unfortunately I am not having much luck here, but I might be doing it wrong. Here is what I have tried:
* Fired up WD Marvel and found the WD drive (I had to connect it to an PCI-E extension card since the WD Marvel would not see it if connected to the onboard SATA controllers
* When you say "read module 02" I was trying to use menu "S/A operations" -> "Modules operations (do not read dir)". In the next window I click "Find modules $01-$FF". A progress bar is shown and a few seconds later it says "Looking for modules, found 0". SO I guess either the program does not like my SATA controller or I do this the wrong way.
* You also mentioned "Heads - Edit Config" so I decided to give that a go. That simply returned "Error reading Config"

I have a couple of other SATA cards I can try, but they are old and weird RAID controllers so I don't have too high hopes.

Will post an update if I strike gold.

Thanks!
Ken

So I fiddled around with a WinXP Bart PE build and could not get WDMarvel to do what it should. After a lot if fiddling I eventually got the original WD drive unlocked using ZU. However, ZU will not unlock the Samsung. Any idea if it is supposed to be able to unlock Samsungs as well?

Thanks!

I tried the SHT demo program but could not get it to load it's driver either on win10 64 bit or on winXP. I followed the instructions on how to install the driver to no avail.

I guess I have spent enough time on this drive - it's not worth spending more time on it. I do wish that the TV tuner would at least have asked before locking the drive down - but I guess that's too much to expect :-)

Thanks for your help Spildit!

/Ken
